Hi Friends, I thought it would be a nice idea to Discuss various types of paints that are being used for various type of paintings. I find a constant query regarding this. It will serve as a ready reckoner for aspiring artists in this forum. Before I begin let me request that posts in this thread may kindly be restricted to queries and knowledge sharing regarding Paints only. For FBs & comments we can start another thread. I will start out with a listing first, 1. Oil Paints 2. Acrylic Paints 3. Stained Glass Paints (Water & Solvent Based) 4. Poster & water colours 5. Ceramic Paints 6. Fabric Paints. 7. Silk Paints 8.Drawing Inks Apart from these of course we have the charcoals, pastels, coloured pencils etc. In this thread lets' try to gain some information regarding various paints. vidya
Paints generally differ only in their binder. In water color binder is gum arabic & solvent is water. For oil paints it is linseed oil & solvent is turpentine and with acrylic binder is man-made plastic & solvent is water. ACRYLIC PAINTS This is a fine medium as it can be used as both water color & oil color technique. That is it can be applied in thin, transparent washes like watercolors,or scumbled or glazed like oil paint. vidya
Continuing with Acrylics… Acrylics can be thinned with water or an acrylic medium, but when dry they are water resistant. Acrylic medium come in gloss or matt finish. The quick drying quality is both an advantage as well as disadvantage with acrylics. Hence some precautions have to be taken: You have to keep all your brushes moist as you are painting. Never let them dry with acrylic paint on the bristles. Don't leave the tops off tubes of acrylic paint; the contents will go rock hard in no time. If this happens, you have to throw them away. Full stop If there's any grease on the painting surface, acrylics will not adhere, unlike oil Paints. Make sure though, the canvas is coated with an acrylic, rather than oil-based primer, or gesso (a product specially made for the acrylic painting technique). Acrylics won't stick to an oil-based primer. Happy Painting Please post your valuable suggestions in this Thread vidya

Hi Rave, Fabric paint is basically acrylic paint which is specially treated to be used on fabrics. So you can use fabric paint instead of acrylic but not vice versa. STAINED GLASS PAINTS;: come in two varieties --- water based (not very durable) and solvent based (longer life). to wash off solvent based ones use turpentine or any petroleum product (kerosene etc) These are used by outlining the design with outline & then filling the design with paints. vidya
Hi, This is an accidental solution I got to wash off the solvent paint from the brush. I dipped with paint on brush into water and the bristels stiffened. I just put a small drop of til/ellu/sesame seed oil to my palm and then stroked the brush and to my surprise the paint started getting off in pieces. then i washed brush in soap to remove oil. I am not sure how safe this is for brush, but this is what I tried.
Thanks a lot for the clarification Vidu29 Nags tip will also be useful as we always have sesame oil at home. Revathi
