    Hi
Tanjore painting involves numerous stages, such as meticulous layingout, prefect sketching, elegant ornamenting with stones, intricate embossing work and gold foiling the deities and finally the finishing enrichment. Embossing is done with a mixture of raw lime stone powder sieved through the muslin cloth and mixed with chalk powder, glue and copper sulphate in certain proportion.

Gold leaves, semi precious stones and mirrors are used to give it the grand look. In the olden days gold dust or bhasma was used instead of gold leaves. All the paintings are done with traditionally made gold foils. Colors used for painting are fungus resistant. The painting lasts for generations.

There are few differences between Tanjore and Mysore style of Painting. In Tanjore, the gesso work is thicker in comparison to the Mysore painting. They also put wooden cardboard to increase the thickness of gesso layer. That gives it a three dimensional feel. Color stones are used in Tanjore painting. In Tanjore painting, the gold foil used is thick while in Mysore painting the foil is delicate in nature.

    Jesso prepation

    Traditional Mysore Style Painting

Procedure(The Hindu : Home Page News & Features)

a sketch is made on the paper with a pencil. Earlier, the sketch was made with charcoal prepared by burning tamarind twigs in an iron tube.

Colours made from minerals were prepared by grinding the minerals in a stone mortar and then putting them in water to make a paste. Brushes were made of different material, including squirrel, camel and goat hair. Sometimes, grass blades were also used to make sharp lines. Now, brushes available in the market are used for painting.

    Gesso work

Once the sketch is made, Gesso work is taken up on the area earmarked. Gesso work is normally done where there is a need for embellishments. Design work is carried out on jewellery, attire, etc., with a specially prepared compound and a brush. On completion of the work, after the compound dries, gold foil is placed over it and stuck firmly.

The painting is done subsequently. After the painting is completed and is dry, a thin paper is placed on top of it and rubbed with a smooth stone to bring out the richness in the relief work done with gold foil.

Mysore painting is basically an aesthetic art form which got its origin during the reign of Wodeyars. It forms an important art tradition in south India.

Mysore paintings are considered classical traditional form of art which is one of the renown among the long list of Indian classical arts.

Mysore art is been famous all over the India for its elegance, royalty, splashes of colour used and the aesthetic designs which attracts the people.

It is more or less similar to tanjore painting except the fact that Mysore painting uses thinner gold leaves as compared to tanjore.

Mysore art involves a lot of hard work and comes out as a piece of expertise that could not encompass any other art form.
This form of art evolved the depiction of Hindu god and goddess in the painting. Most probably all the Mysore paintings can be seen with the image of Lord Srinath who is believed to be the incarnation of lord Vishnu.

The designs of paintings are etched with intricate designs and colour where the image of god appears against the dark background.

    Things used in Mysore painting
1.Mysore painting uses inputs like natural colours made from pigment of leaves and trees. Natural things would also include brush, paints, board and gold.

2.As of now with exposure of media and commercial projects the task of painting is being done using water colours and other types of colours.

3.In earlier times things like paper, cloth, wood and wall are the sources required for the painting however, today in modern times execution of art has transformed using modern techniques.
Colour brushes are usually made from hairs of squirrel, goat, horse and camel.

The following steps are taken while the execution of Mysore painting:
The board is prepared and sketch is made on the paper using pencil. Usually sketch is made; if tracing is available then it is directly transferred to the board with the carbon paper.

In the ancient times colours were prepared from natural minerals by grinding them and then dipped in water to make a soft paste. The sketching in those times was done with charcoal which was prepared by tamarind twigs in an iron tube.

After the sketch a paste of zinc oxide and Arabic gum is made. Gesso work is being done on the ear marked where embellishments are to be made.

The raised parts are completed first such as jewelry or throne with specially prepared compound and brush.

The final step is executed when gold foil are placed and stuck over the painting. Painting is finally left over to dry, a thin paper is placed on it and rubbed softly with a smooth stone to bring richness of gold work.

Unlike tanjore painting in which thicker goldfoil sheets are used, raw foil, very thin, is used for mysore painting. It is available in bundles only, in Mehta Diamonds, costs somewhere around Rs.4000.
