Hi Srini,

Thats a wonderful idea!

Getting to know about TirukKural will be an ideal opportunity for someone like me who till date regret not doing justice to my mother tongue. I was never confident in that subject partly because of my school tamil teacher who never created interest of any sorts in the language . I even switched over to French in my +1 for the fear of scoring low marks in tamil. But only later did i realise how i had walked past a treasure trove!!

Thanks in advance and awaiting your thread.

Best Wishes

Roshni

hi chechi,
tirukkural is one of the earliest poetic works in tamil, by the poet tiruvalluvar.
it is in the form of couplets, each having no more than seven words...
there are 133 chapters with 10 couplets or kurals each,so there's a total of 1330 kurals...
Every chapter offers wisdom and code of conduct on a particular subject.
the chapters are under 3 major classifications - Aram (virtue or dharma)[chap 1-38], Porul(materialities of life)[chap 39-108] and Inbam(conjugal relationship)[chap 109 - 133]

you can imagine what a monumental task she has undertaken....
add to it the fact that the verses are in highly literary tamil, very different from the one in current day use...

Devika,
Thank you so much for your encouragement.....Hope Sowparnika has cleared your doubts....

sowparnika,
Thanks ma for the fb and also your introduction of Thirukkural to Devika., I am
you...
nice idea., a separate thread for Thirukkural and the fbs here, ok...

Lakshmi,
Hope you and your children enjoy along with me... I am also learning through this experience...

Roshni,
Me too, in those days, not much interested, and only by-heart those allotted kurals for the standard...felt bad later on and wanted to learn it...so I am also learning through this.....

Thank you all for the encouragement....Hope to keep up to your expectations...I also need help...If I am wrong or at loss of words., please feel free to correct me....

To tell the truth I was going through the fbs a lot of times and was amazed to know the interest you all have in learning Kural and also the confidence on me....it should not be like this...later on....pray to keep your confidence justified...

There is a slight change, I thought of -- 5 kurals each day, which will enable us to know about Kural in about 6 months.. as 5 servings of fruits and vegetables help us to stay healthy...hope 5 kural a day keeps our mind healthy...
what say...
I am starting that thread named 5 Kural a day....separately as suggested by sowparnika...

Sri,

Among all scriptures, Kural is the most precious to me.It is already translated in English on the net. There are 1100 stanzas , and each is a beauty.I have taken out the printout and made into a book.

It is very practical book and relevant even today. The examples he quotes are so practical and useful even today.

Regards.kamal
