Lightbulb The "Great Indian" Puzzle Thread!

Hello Friends,

Myself and Induslady have been exchanging some conversations around the best way to run a puzzle thread. Here is what we propose:
  • Any one can post a puzzle in this thread for others to solve.
  • Other members can post their solutions to the puzzle in this thread itself (no need to private message me with your answers).
  • Once the puzzle is solved (confirmed by the original poster or other members), the next person can post their puzzle.
This will ensure that for those who are interested in solving puzzles, there will always be an open puzzle to solve in this thread! Secondly, the quality of puzzles will improve as everyone will put their best puzzle for others to solve. Finally, it will give me the opportunity to try solving these puzzles and post all my (wrong) answers!!

Default Let me get this thread going!

Let me get this thread started with a puzzle of mine! Yes, I created this puzzle and hence it is going to be very easy!

Preethi and Priyum decided to take a road-trip on the south-eastern parts of Australia. Preethi kept a meticulous diary of their activities and it is given below. Their car had a capacity of 40 gallons.

Activity-----------Odometer(miles)------Gas/Petrol
Leave Home----------25768----------------Tank Full
Reset the Odometer----25848
Fill gas---------------472------------------Half Full
Reach Destination------748
Reset the Odometer----1064
Fill gas---------------236------------------1/4 Full
Reach Home----------512------------------3/4 Full

With this information, please tell me..

a. What is the distance to their destination?
b. What is the gas mileage of their car?
c. Did they take the same route to and fro?

Malathy

Default Those are right answers.

Hi Jaylakshmi/Gayathri,

Your answers were right! For the benefit of others, can one of you explain how you solved the puzzle?

Gayathri, there is no need to private message the poster of the puzzle. You can provide your answers in the thread itself.

Priyum, Before I could respond to your doubt, Jaylakshmi and Gayathri have solved the puzzle. Sorry about that. Resetting the trip odometer was more for twisting the puzzle than a practical reality.

Who is going to post the next puzzle?

Malathy

Default Great Indian Puzzle

Hi,

Thanks for posting this puzzle. I really enjoyed solving it. I had some problem during cut and paste from word. Hope this explains the solution well.

Activity-----------Odometer(miles)------Gas/Petrol
Leave Home
----------25768----------------Tank Full
Reset the Odometer
----25848 80 miles
Fill gas---------------472-----------------Half Full 552 miles in
20 gallons
Reach Destination------748 828 miles – one way
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reset the Odometer
----1064 316 miles
Fill gas
---------------236------------------1/4 Full 552 miles
828 miles in
30 gallons
Reach Home
----------512------------------3/4 Full 828 miles
276 miles in
10 gallons

Tallying:
10 gallons – 276 miles
20 gallons – 552 miles
30 gallons – 828 miles

Jay

Default Solution to No.2 Puzzle

Vandhana,

Solution to Puzzle 2 is POLYESTER.

I need more time to solve Puzzle 1. Looks quite tricky and difficult, If I succeed solving it, will post reply.

Love,
Preethi

Oh Malathy,
I will run away somewhere if you give such puzzles, zi hate mathematics. My friend's grandpa was a school teacher and he used to ask us such puzzles. So if we sight him anywhere, we used to jump over the walls and escape from, this is not for joke but really we all did that. He is no more, poor soul.
