Default The "Great Indian" Puzzle Thread! - march '07

You must cut a gold chain to pay someone for 7 days of service. The chain has 7 links on it, and you agree on a price of one link per day. The employee will not work without receiving that day's pay each afternoon, but you do not wish to give him more than his daily payment for the fear that he will not return. Therefore, you must cut some of the links on the chain to make the daily payments. What is the smallest number of links you need to cut so that the employee receives only one link each day?

After a long time, agian this thread is active... Even i didnt notice ur question all these days....
This is a guess....
If u have 7 links on the chain, it'll give 8 pieces.... So if u cut those 7 links, one piece is left on the for u last day ...
U can cut only one link each day, and u can give it to him....
This is the minimum possibility.....
How about this?

Gayathri.

hi heena

i think the answer is 3.........(if it is circular)

and only two links if it is open(i.e straight)

by doing so we get 1no. link,2no. link ,4 no.link
give him 1
2no and take bac 1 no.
give him 1 no. to make it 3(2+1)
take bac all and give him 4
again give him 1--(4+1)
take bac 1 and give him 2 no.---(4+2)
finally give him 1no. on last day
