There is something like this in tamil too. I dont remember it..with the goat and a tiger?????

Actually, when we were young we had a lot of stuff like this. just dont remember they are real brain teasers.

Sorry for the delay.
Here goes the solution to the puzzle.....

1. The Police man takes the red haired girl across the river and leaves her there and comes back.
2. Next, he takes one boy along with him and leaves him there and comes back with red hair girl.
3. Then, the father crosses the river with the other boy, leaves him there and comes back.
4. The mother and father go together and mother alone comes back.
5. The Policeman again crosses the river with the red haired girl.
6. The father comes alone and takes mother with him leaving the two girls there.
7. The mother comes alone and takes the girl with her and crosses the river. Now only one girl is left that side.
8. The policeman comes back along with the red haired girl. He leaves the red hair girl there and takes the other girl with him.
9. He comes back again to take the red haired girl. Thus all of them have crossed the river.
