Post How to reach & Where to stay in Kaziranga National Park

Great information Pubali. Moi aaru olop add kori diu ne? (Let me add some more...)
Quote:
Journey to Kaziranga National Park in Assam

Airport : The nearest airport is situated at Guwahati which is 217-km away from the park. The other airport is located at Jorhat, 96-km from Kaziranga.

Railhead : The nearest railhead is Furkating, situated 75-km away from Kaziranga National Park.

Road Tansport : The main gate for Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary, at Kohora on the NH-37, consists of a handful of cafes and a small local market. ASTC and private buses stop here on their way to and from Guwahati, Tezpur and Upper Assam. Some private buses also retain a seat quota for Kaziranga passengers.

Staying near Kaziranga National Park in Assam
Most of the accommodation available at the park is located along the NH-37, which runs along the southern border of the park. The main locations of accommodation facilities are at Kohora and Baguri.

There is a variety of accommodation types to choose from which consist of Forest rest houses, Bungalows, Lodges and Hotels. Even though the number of rooms available is good, the demand is more than the supply and it is advisable to make your bookings well in advance to avoid last minute harassment.

Smile Re: Have you visited Kaziranga National Park - World Heritage Site

Its nice to read about Kaziranga in this forum. Indeed, my childhood memories are revived. I remember as a little girl how excited me and my brother used to be to visit this national park. We used to stay in Upper Assam, so we used to start our journey to Kaziranga late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, so that we could reach early and enjoy our stay there.

As the NH-37 runs parallel to the National Park, getting a glimpse of some animals very close to the highway was quite common. I really-really look forward to visiting Kaziranga again and enjoy Elephant safari amongst other things.

Moi aahi aasu (I hope that's right....sorry otherwise)

Its great that you still remember Assamese.
How long is it been that you have visited Assam? As you mentioned your childhood days, I believe it might be almost a decade or two, right? Much have changed in all these years, considering the development and infrastructural facilities. However, what hasn't changed is the love, simplicity, easy-going lifestyle and hospitality of the people here.
Hope to see you back in Kaziranga soon.

Lightbulb Preserving Rhinos at Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga is the oldest wildlife reserve in Assam, which is around 200 km east of Northeast India's prime city, Guwahati, covers an area of 430 sq km (with an additional area of over 400 sq km) on the southern bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra and Kaziranga is understandably home to nearly 60 Indian Tigers.

The landscape of Kaziranga comprises the sheer forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes & shallow pools etc.The picturesque reserve gives shelter to almost two-thirds of the total population of one-horned rhinos on Earth.

A 1984 census showed Kaziranga having 1,080 rhinos. The census in 1999 showed the number of rhinos soared up to 1,552. The last census in 2006 revealed the number of rhinos in the park at 1,855.

Great piece of information.
Are the Rhinos and the Big Cats an endangered lot in Kaziranga as in other Forest Reserves in India. What are the other animals found there in the forest reserve?

I definitely look forward to visit Kaziranga sometime.

Happy posting!

Lightbulb Re: Have you visited Kaziranga National Park - World Heritage Site

Thanks Roopa, its nice knowing you are coming to visit Kaziranga. I'm sure you'll love the adventure and the safari.

Sonia, the Tigers and Rhinos are of course endangered considering the menace of organized network of poachers across the country. However, a special committee has been set up and measures are taken for conservation of this endangered species.

The wild inmates, besides rhinoceros, tiger and leopard, include wild buffalo, elephant, wild boar, Indian gaur, hoolock gibbon, bison, swamp deer, sambar, hog deer, jackal, monkey, hornbill, goose, varieties of snakes, reptiles etc, according to an official account of the Assam forest department.

Thumbs up Re: Have you visited Kaziranga National Park - World Heritage Site

Hi Friends, For all those who are keeping track of Kaziranga, here is good news for you.
Quote:
At a time when tigers are fast vanishing from various sanctuaries of the country, the big cats seem to have got a healthy habitat in Assam's Kaziranga.

The national park on the southern banks of the Brahmaputra has 24.5 tigers per 100 sq km the "healthiest" density the big cat enjoys in the country. Reports have revealed that Tiger density in other protected areas is 17-18 per 100 sq km.

Though the actual tiger estimate in the 863 sq km-Kaziranga is yet to be published, preliminary findings of the tiger density in the sanctuary showed "a healthy sign of big cat population in the park". There are 24.5 tigers per 100 sq km in Kaziranga - the highest density in the country. This is however, just a conservative estimate, and the administration is optimistic about a higher figure at the end of the census.
Isn't that encouraging for India's Project Tiger?
