Hello All,
Its a new experience for me to be connected to so many members of IL and share something together. Let me tell you about my username.
I was studying at Delhi University for my Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences. My supervisor a well reputed man in geology, late Prof. A.G.Jhingran had two sons. I was friendly to both as the elder one was a year Junior to me in BHU from where I graduated. The second younger one was an exciting man. My surname was Pachauri which was close to the word kachauri which is an Indian pencake eaten at every morning in smaller towns all over India at breakfast as well in marriages. there are no north Indian marriages without serving Kachauris. So I was often made to laugh with others at my surname. As a student I was introduced by my greoup leader to a hall full of audience as Mr Kachauri because he had never heard of Pachauri and he knew only Kachauri and that till date remains the most innocent and lively misuse of my surname.
This friend of mind started searching a small form of my surname and suggested calleing me Patch to which I agreed.
this helped me later 15 years after when an American friend visited us at Roorkee and I had to show them geology of Himalayas. He asked me without hesitation if he could call me patch as he was called Pete fro peter Birksland. How my friend had foreseen the use of short name 15 years in advance I did not know but since than I am patch and prefer to remain so.
Thats what I can tell about surname. besides, I like patches whether on pant or anywhere. Life is also full of patches from here and there Is not It?
By the way I am still serching an Indian family in Lausanne where I can be housed in May;June 2010 and would appreciate a feedback.
