Opting for not using silk or any such items (leather), are a personal choice. It cannot be forced on anyone.

It's sad that silk worms are produced just to get the silk from them, but that is their purpose of life.

South Indians wear the most Silk Sarees. I too, being one of them, wear them during special occassions.

Dear Saipriya

Your noble sentiment about not harming the silkworm does you much credit. But it is a reality of life that, temporary pleasures of decking oneself up with animal products like leather, animal fur coats or filling one’s belly with animal flesh has resulted in humans being more desensitized to the plight of animals.

You are showing compassion to a silkworm, but there are several larger animals which are higher up on the evolutionary scale which also deserve protection, even if they are in no danger of extinction. For example, think of the cow that has been venerated for generations as “Go Matha” which literally means cow mother. We drink cow milk for a whole lot longer than we drink our mother’s milk. It is such a noble animal, a beast that has only shared man’s burden uncomplainingly. The cow is one of the most biologically efficient machines, which can convert a handful of grass into energy that makes it toil in the field all day and it has virtually zero maintenance costs. The milk nourishes the family; the dung is a powerful source of methane, which is non polluting gas. Even after death, its hide is used for leather. What more can a mere “animal” offer?

Yet this very cow is butchered and slaughtered with no compunction and eaten almost as if there is absolutely no other food in this world! I have even seen the younger generations of traditional families enjoying beef steaks. I must honestly admit that this sight does not give me any joy.

I have discussed the cow only for illustration purpose, there are a plethora of animals that suffer from the insensitivity of the human race, from the humble silkworm to the leviathan whales of the ocean and nothing has been spared.

Indeed it is a matter of choice whether one chooses to wear silk or eat meat or whatever, but how often will you come across suppliers or manufacturers who will place humane values above commercial interests, or stumble upon consumers who place compassion above their temporary corporeal pleasures.

Man is the only creature capable of taking away from the oyster the only valuable possession it has, namely the pearl, so taking silk from the silkworm is only a logical extrapolation of this fundamental quirk in his nature.

Regards.

Hi,
Its a great view that killing creatures for our pleasure is not good...but as others feel i too feel its a cycle....if not for silk no one will even breed these worms...we need to pamper ourselves also and more over the environmental cycle has to also revolve.....we are having a discussion here feeling sorry for silk worms but who will stop human killing.....great people and astrologers say that mass calamity deaths like tsunami or earthquakes are caused to equalise the burden of mother earth.....so eveything is a must and need to balance earth....its upto each persons choice to select their need.....whatever it may be we need to kill silk worms for our purpose atleast once in our lifetime on our wedding day....keep your good thoughts moving.....

Dear SaiPriya
I appreciate your sympathy towards those silk worms. But wearing a silk dress or not, is individuals decision.

When only the silk worms are pointed out, there are numerous other creatures going through a similar process, so to be used by us.. starting from the plants.. everything has got a life and we destroy for our selfish satisfactions.. But this something that cannot be avoided.. those worms are sacrificing themselves to serve us.

We should take it as a leason that in this life, if not like those worms, atleast to whatever extent I can I will be of help to others and will give the best service to God.
