Smile Who am I? - Part II

Hi People,
This is Yasmin here. I live in Riyadh alongwith my husband. I m basically from Bangalore, but came here last year, thats after i got married. Though i was working in India, here i m doing nothing but just sitting at home n trying to be a good homemaker. Now my favourite time-pass is surfing the net, watching reality shows and trying new recipes.
This is how my days r passing here in this place. But i really miss home n my family.

The great grandmother.. affectionately called kollu by my children... is an amazing woman all of 95 years...still very alert and sharp...arthritis has confined her to her room from where she has an eye on everything going on not only in my flat but also who goes up the lift whos not been seen for quite some time now ...though all the time she claims she cant see!!!!!!!!!!She has to know what my husband had for breakfast..and will unfailingly ask him to come back sooon in the evening.
She will wait for my younger daughter to wave to her from the door every day on her way to school.. and keep track of her uniforms.. innikku Friday Chandni has to wear her sports uniform!!!!!!!!! something my daughter often forgets!!!
My fatherinlaw has been bedridden now for almost 3 years with altered sensorium this has changed all our lives in unimaginable ways.. he used to be a very jovial person and very very active..this has been especially difficult for my motherinlaw who is one of the cloyingly dependant kind of woman. Overnight her world turned topsy turvy and she still hasnt come to terms with it.
My husband is extremely patient and very respectful ... hes the best thing to have happened in my life..We just completed 25 years of marriage. He works very hard as the sole bread winner .

I have 2 daughters ... the greatest gifts God has given us...the older one is an architect who has just started her career in Bangalore and the younger one is 16 waiting for her class 10 results.
We have taken 2 flats in the same building.. one on the ground and another on the third floor ...and I run up and down so many times everyday.. my maid says... akka ullangkaalile chakramthaan irukku .. odinde irukkanga...
but it gives me space both physically and emotionally....
Ivisit the temple or at least try to every morning....cook breakfast and pack lunch for husband and kids... then rush down to cook for the older people....juggling the washing, cleaning etc.. in between.
I love reading... and try not to fall asleep before i turn 3 pages.

The little incident made me ponder over the fact that are our old and rich family values diminishing so fast that we are looking for ''Days'' to shower our affection on our parents? Is this dependence due to lack of time in our daily routine or just another example of aping western culture?
Indian culture is so rich and families are so strong entities that each relationship is well defined and is based upon great respect, love and affection. The spirit of selflessness is inculcated quite unconsciously in the mental make-up of children that they learn to respond with unselfish love towards their parents and why not, it is only in our culture that parents, especially mother, sacrifices her priorities and accords importance to child and his needs.
However, I do not deny the fact that families are disintegrating and focus is now on ''me'', single individual as now the concept of nuclear family is also disappearing. I do not decry the celebration of ''Days'' especially, for our parents, as those short moments certainly enliven the old people for some time who otherwise feel ignored and lead isolated lives in families or in old-age homes.
But the issue certainly invites serious thoughts. Is the mad race for material success at the cost of parents and family is worth it? Can celebrating the ''Days'' once a year make up for the loneliness and humiliation that the old people suffer every day? Can love and respect be conveyed through few formalities or in our day to day conduct and affection which knows no language and ceremony, but is just felt by heart and a soft touch on the skin?

Hi Shyamala, Khushi, Panditmaaya, Aysh and coolmommy, Welcome to Indusladies.com. Thank you for taking the time to introduce yourselves. Please visit www.indusladies.com/welcome to find your way around this forum. There is so much to explore here.

Shyamala, it has took you 2 years to get active! Better late than never and we look forward to seeing you around more often.

Khushi, I see that you are already getting active in our Japan forum. Please start a few discussion topics there and soon you will find friends there.

Hi Panditmaaya, you raise a very pertinent point. Since this thread is for member introductions, you would get better response if you post it in the Snippets of Life forum. If you like writing, you can take a blog space in IL. Either way, look forward to seeing you are here more.

Hi Aysh, we also have a forum for Northern Europe. Please get active there during you stay in Scotland.
