    To start with
    Azadirachta indica

    This is commonly called as NEEM. It belongs to the family Meliaceae.
    It is a sacred tree, village pharmacy.The common uses of neem are:
    It is antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral.

    USES
    For chicken pox, grind the young twig along with turmeric and apply on the spots.
    Apply neem paste in the hair once in a fortnight and one can get rid of lice and nits.
    Neem blossoms are used to keep rasam and pachali in south India during new year.
    Neem twigs in olden days were used as brush, even now in village it is used as brush.
    Neem oil is used in various cosmetic items.
    It is a sacred tree involved in various rituals of hinduism.
    Lets not forget "our natures drug store" and use it effeciently, live healthily.

    After seeing the response I think I should discuss a plant one day. Thank you friends for the feed back.
    [JUSTIFY]Todays plant is
    Ocimum tenuiflorum

    This is commonly called as TULSI. It belongs to the family Lamiaceae.
    This aromatic plant is cultivated for the medicinal and religious uses.
    Tulsi plays a vital role in Ayurvedic medicine.Tulsi is used as a remedy for common cold. In hindu temples especially in perumal temples they use to give the leaved along with water. This prevents us from cold.Tulsi twigs are used in the rice bags or cereal containers to get rid of insects.
    While making greens curry( keerai kadayal) , add 10 to 12 leaves of tulsi leaves, as some people dont like to eat it raw.
    To get rid of lice, while sleeping cover the head with a towel full of tulsi leaves, if we try it for a week, lice wont come again.
    Tulsi plays a vital role in hinduism. We have tulsi madam, which is believed to be Goddess Lakshmis place.
    Another interesting news is love birds feed on tulsi leaves. I have experienced it. Love birds love to feed on the tulsi leaves, dont give overdose, give 3 or 4 leaves for a pair in a week.[/JUSTIFY]

    Todays plant is Phyllanthus emblica
    Commonly called as Gooseberry, Nellikai.
    It belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae

    The fruits either fresh or dried are used as Ayurvedic medicine.
    It is also a very important ingredient in the famous Chyavanaprash, and a constituent of Triphala (three fruits) powder
    Amla is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C, its fresh juice containing nearly twenty times as much vitamin C as orange juice.
    It increases red blood cell count.
    Amla pickle can be made and can be taken in regular food.
    Amla oil is used as a hair conditioner and an effective preventing for balding and graying of hair.
    The fruits are put in homey and if had regularly in our diet will enhance the growth of hair and also gives good strength to the body and gives resistance.This preparation is good for children also.
    The fruits are good tonic for general vitality.
    Indian government has released a stamp on this plant for its medicinal importance.

    Wood Apple

    Todays plant is Aegle marmelos
    Commonly called as Wood apple, Indian Quince
    It belongs to the family Rutaceae.

    Uses
    The fruit is eaten fresh or dried. If fresh, the juice is strained and sweetened to make a drink similar to lemonade. It can be made into sharbat. The pulp of the fruit is used for making Jam and pickles.
    The pulp is very good for curing digestive disorders.
    It is also a good tonic for general vitality.
    The leaves are used for religious purpose in hindu temples. It is used in the worship of Shiva, who is said to favor the leaves. The trifoliate leaves symbolize the trident that Shiva holds in his right hand.
    The fruits besides being medicine are good herbal supplement.
    Ripe bael fruit is regarded as best of all laxatives.

    Garlic (Lasun)

    Todays plant is Allium sativum
    This is commonly called as Garlic..
    It belongs to the family Alliaceae. This is a bulbous perennial food plant

    Garlic is widely used around the world for its pungent flavor as a seasoning or condiment.
    Garlic has been found to have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activity
    Garlic increases lactation after pregnancy.
    It works as a cleanser of the digestive system.
    Garlic stimulates the immune system of body & helps in fighting against various diseases including cancer.
    It acts as a nasal decongestant & expectorant.
    Garlic increases the levels of high density lipoproteins & reduces harmful cholesterol in the blood & keeps arteries and heart healthy.
    In both Hinduism and Jainism, garlic is considered to stimulate and warm the body and to increase one's desires. Some people generally avoid using garlic and the related onion in the preparation of foods for religious festivities and events.

    Aloe vera

    Todays plant is Aloe vera

    This belongs to the family Xanthorrhoeaceae


    Aloe vera plant is also known as ‘lily of the desert’, the plant of immortality’, and the ‘medicine plant’ with qualities to serve as alternate medicine.
    The Aloe vera Gel is a colorless, odorless, hydrocolloid with several natural beneficial substances. The effectiveness of the gel as a cosmetic skin care and pharmaceutical product is indisputable.
    Traditionally Aloe vera gel is used as a soothing topical application for sunburns and minor burns, abrasions, acne, psoriasis, shingles and even cold sores. The gel can be squeezed directly from the fresh leaf and applied directly to affected areas. Its skin repair qualities on burns, and sub burns is truly remarkable - healing occurs quickly and without scarring. In fact, aloe vera is also used to reduce scarring and stretch marks.
    Aloe vera shows to protect the skin against the immune suppressant effect of ulta violet rays of the sun - thus it is not only an excellent 'after sun care' ingredient, but may also be useful as a protective sunscreen lotion. It is an excellent additive for cosmetic preparations as it can moisturize and rejuvenate the skin by stimulating synthesis of elastin and collagen.
    Aloe vera gel is used as an ingredient in commercially available lotion, yogurt, beverages, and some desserts
    Aloe vera extracts have antibacterial and antifungal activities, which may help in the treatment of minor skin infections, such as boils and wounds
    External application of aloe gel penetrates the skin directly and produces a soothing, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect on arthritic joints and tendonitis.
    Aloe juice helps in digestive disorders
    Aloe vera products are used in makeup, tissues, moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, incense, shaving cream, and shampoos
    When making your own skin care preparations and you want to incorporate the healing benefits of Aloe vera, you can use the gel to replace all or a portion of the amount of liquid your recipe calls for. However, be aware that unprocessed Aloe vera gel is not very stable and won't keep long, so make small batches only, store it in the fridge and use up quickly. For maximum benefit of Aloe Vera as an ingredient of skin care preparations such products should contain at least 20-40% of gel. Or simply cut off a leaf and rub it straight on the skin.
    Apart from its medicinal uses, selected number of aloe species valued for their beauty and ornamental value.

    Dhub grass/Arugampul

    Today's plant is Cynodon dactylon
    This is commonly called as Dhub, Arugampul,It belongs o\to the family Poaceae.


    It is well known for its medicinal properties, notably its action in regulating the vitiated doshas.
    It is a diuretic. It quenches thirst. It tastes sweet and is regarded as a moderator of doshas.
    When applied on fresh wounds it helps the blood to clot fast. It helps in healing old wounds too.
    It helps in detoxifying your body.
    Take juice of arugampul every morning on empty stomach. It helps in removing toxins from your body.
    A paste made from arugampul and turmeric can be applied on skin to treat problems like scabies, eczema etc.
    Regular application is found to cure the eczema and scabies.
    In South India Arugampul is regarded as a holy herb along with basil and neem. Arugampul is the herb of Lord Ganapathi, the Hindu God whom people worship before starting anything important.

    Clove

    Syzygium aromaticum
    It belongs to the family Myrtaceae
    This is commonly called as Clove/Krambu

    Cloves are used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine, Chinese medicine, and western herbalism and dentistry, where the essential oil is used as an anodyne (painkiller) for dental emergencies.
    Cloves are used as a carminative, to increase hydrochloric acid in the stomach and to improve peristalsis.
    Cloves are also said to be a natural anthelmintic.
    The volatile oil contains the medicinal properties and it is strong germicide, antiseptic and a local irritant. It has been used as an expectorant to aid bronchial troubles.
    Clove oil is used in various skin disorders like acne, pimples etc. It is also used in severe burns, skin irritations and to reduce the sensitiveness of skin.
    The buds have anti-oxidant properties.
    Clove has cooling and anti-inflammatory effect and thereby clears the nasal passage.
    Clove decoction or clove oil can be added to milk to treat respiratory disorders like coughs, colds, bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis and tuberculosis.
    Cloves promote enzymatic flow and boosts digestive functioning.
    Clove can be a useful addition to food. It is useful for boosting the immune system and its antiviral properties purifies the blood and increases resistance to diseases.

    Cardamom/Elakkai

    Elettaria cardamomum

    This is commonly called as cardamom/Elakkai.This belongs to the family Zingiberaceae

    The aroma and therapeutic properties of cardamom are due to its volatile oil. Tinctures of cardamom are used chiefly in medicines to relieve flatulence and for strengthening digestion activities.

    Cardamom reduces the air and water elements, increases appetite and soothes the mucous membrane. It relieves gas and heart-burn caused by garlic and onion. Ground cardamom seed mixed with ginger, cloves and coriander, is an effective remedy for indigestion. A tea made from cardamom is valuable in headache caused by indigestion.

    The aromatic flavour in cardamom is a breath freshener. A . few seeds chewed for a brief period will remove foul smell.

    Powdered seeds of cardamom are boiled in water with tea. It gives a very pleasing aroma to the tea. This can be used as a remedy in the treatment of depression

    In India , cardamom is used as masticatory and often included in pan-supari. It is used for flavoring curries, cakes, bread and for other culinary purposes, like flavoring coffee or confectionery.

    The essential oil of cardamom is used for pharmaceutical purposes, perfumery, flavoring liquers and bitters, in the preparation of tincture and as a stimulant.
