Leena,
I agree with meena to an extent. Genes definitely play a great role, but does not guarantee that a singer's kid will be a great singer like him/her(though coming out of the parent's fame and style is a different story for example vijay jesudas,)
Music in any form is music. keep yourself open.the more you learn to appreciate all types of music, you are teaching your child to be open, and also being tolerant and appreciative.
am i moving away from the question.. I hope not..
coming to music, I do not come from a musically oriented family, but did get into a music loving family that definitely introduced me to the nuances of carnatic music. CM was greek and latin to me apart from having an idea that it was sapthaswara before marriage.
In our home, we have music playing all throughout the day. Earlier music other than CM was never allowed. but now my FIL has become a little more open to listen to western and film music.(credit goes to the kids)
When a song like kangal irandaal is being played, we tend to start thinking about the raga it is based on, and other songs it resembles.
A very playful way of inculcating interest ..just break down the songs into notes (most of the notes are available freely on the net..) even twinkle twinkle and baa baa black sheep can be done the same way. a little effort to make it playful and interesting goes a long way.
When the child latches to the sense of rhythm (which most of us have) and cultivates the same, his interest in music will grow.
At the same time, we cannot force much on to a child. if the child wants to learn dance, instead of music, we need to accept that dance is also an art.
Both my children learn CM. Since music was always part of growing up they don't find it boring most of the times. but these days they don't like to practice much. DD loves to sing pop and western. DS likes to cook up his own music.
but deep down they appreciate music and enjoy it. I want them to enjoy what they are doing.
Listening to music, attending concerts (if the child shows appreciation and inclination) are two ways of introducing music.
On top of all this, we as parents need more patience, and less expectations (not all can become mss or sudha raghunathan)
