    Offtopic:

I have always wanted to ask this to a seasoned carnatic music listener: why does sometime tears flow down when listening to some songs/ragas/music?

There is some reasoning plausible, for eg., when it happens when someone is in grief and when he/she comes across "punarapi jananam punarapi maranam".

But why does that happen even in normal times when i don't see a 'connect' with the meaning?

PS: JAG, thanks for allowing(!) me to hijack this thread :)

That's the magic or power of music I think. This happens to me whenever I hear sahana ragam. I'm addicted to that ragam.

Nemesis, the ragas in which these krithis or songs are set invoke the karuna rasa or the bhakti bhava. you sometimes don't need the lyrics even just the raga played on a violin can invoke the same pleasure.

just few days back my son was listening to this track frequently, and he told me that it was making him calm and peaceful (another story why he explained it to me..)
you never know what triggers those feelings..but yet music has wonderful healing powers..bhilahari makes you want to smile, while subhapanthuvarali makes you heavy and tearful sometimes. sahana is karuna rasa (compassion)

my fil is so addicted to bhajans, at his age losing his parter of 47 years, music was the only anchor..

Did you know there is a vast research on music therapy in india. i still remember a old lady who was cured listening to shakarabharanam movie songs that it was a news item those days.

you would have been to music aisles in the malls or landmark..have you checked out the cd's for relaxation, music for sleep etc.. it is a great business today.

all said, there is a science behind music being medicine, and i do believe in it..
