Exclamation Another Deluge in Mumbai?

The mention of Mumbai rains bring a chill down the spine since the deluge of 2005. And the rains this year has already created havoc, with the BMC many a times cautioning people to go out only if it is urgent.

I just saw on television that the Mithi river has crossed the danger mark and people are evacuated in Kurla. Again, there are news of Mumbai to witness the highest tide in 100 years.

Quote:
On July 24, at 2.23 pm, Mumbai coast would see a tide as high as 5.01 mts – which would be the highest for the last 100 years. The other days when above average high tides are expected are – June 24 (1.41pm/4.95 mts), June 25 (2.24 pm/4.97 mts), July 23 (1.23 pm/5.01 mts), 24 July 2009 Friday 2:03 pm 5.05mts and July 25 (2.43 pm/4.94 mts). Though tide simply may not mean anything, but it may affect Mumbaikars only if there are extremely heavy rains around that time.
I guess the whole of India is worried for you all Mumbaikars. Keep us posted on the ground situation.

God Bless!

Sonia

Unhappy Re: Another Deluge in Mumbai?

Scary situation in Mumbai. The administration has provided 82 extra buses to help stranded people reach their homes.

Have your loved ones reached home?

Question Is Mumbai prepared for any eventualities?

Mumbai is bracing itself against what could turn out to be a tide higher than what it faced four years ago during the great deluge. Shortly after 2 pm today, Mumbai is expecting one of the highest tides in years. It could exceed five metres. High tides above 4.15 metres are considered dangerous.

The local civic body has instructed the fire brigade, coast guard and Navy to be on alert and has placed full-page advertisements in newspapers, asking people to be cautious. Citizens have been urged not to move out during heavy rains unless extremely necessary. They have also been asked to monitor media for weather updates before leaving home.

People living in the low-lying areas have specifically been asked to be on alert.
Apart from these, people have been asked to always carry a few eatables and safe drinking water while stepping out of the house. On that cautionary note, a few schools have asked students to stay at home on the high tide dates.

Is Mumbai prepared for any eventualities?

Default Re: Another Deluge in Mumbai?

The highest tide was in 1980's and it went quietly as there was no heavy rain.

This period will also vanish, it is only to create panic in human minds.

If i show you a branch shaking due to gusty winds and say it is the hand of a demon and keep saying it, it gets in to our pysche and we start believing it!

As the tide phase is over and today is 24th july 2009, i close this thread.
