* Aishwarya Rai made her debut against Mohanlal in Iruvar (Tamil).
* Mohanlal and Priyadarshan used to be arch enemies during their time at college. Both supported different rival political wings.
* Mohanlal and his friends produced their first movie in 1978 (Thiranottam) which was never released.
* Mohanlal was an amateur wrestler. He was due to go for the National championship in Delhi, when he was called to audition for the role Narendran in Manjil Virinja Pookkal by Navodaya. His friends had sent his photographs to Navodya productions, and the company was looking for fresh actors.
* Mohanlal's personal Assistant and Producer Antony Perumbaavoor was a taxi driver in Eranakulam and used to take Mohanlal from his hotel to the filming location of the movie Pattanapravesam. What started a good friendship ended with Mohanlal offering Antony the position of a personal driver. Antony has since been with Mohanlal and now produces films under the banner Aasirvaad Productions. His first movie (Narasimham)was a major hit.
* Most of his best school-college mates are with him in the film industry. These include Priyadarshan, M.G.Sreekumar, Raju and producer Suresh Kumar.
* Mohanlal's friends and family call him Lalu.
* Mohanlal's main hobby is collecting antiques and artifacts. He has a great collection of paintings.
* Mohanlal has acted only in three Tamil films even though his father-in-law was a famous Tamil producer.
* Mohanlal is the third youngest actor to get national award for Best Actor (in 1992, aged 32, for Bharatham) after Mithun Chakraborthy (in 1975, aged 30, film Mrigaya), Naseeruddin Shah (in 1980, aged 30, film Sparsh) and Kamal Haasan (in 1983, aged 29, film Moondram Pirai). However, he received a special Jury Award when he was 30 for his performance in Kireedam.
* It is a little known fact that Mohanlal won a Best Actor Award during his sixth standard in school, an award usually won only by the people from tenth standard. Actor Maniyanpilla Raju directed that stage drama and was the first person to put make up on Mohanlal's face.
* Mohanlal reached Trivandrum in a helicopter from Palakkad because of tight schedules to attend Kaumudi honouring director Priyadarshan. Mohanlal said he would have felt ashamed of himself if he couldn't make it to a function that was honouring his best friend and their friendship.
* Mohanlal was also featured among 50 most powerful personalities by India Today
* Mohanlal is known for his absolute commitment to any role. He even goes to the extent of performing rigorous training in certain arts required by the role. Examples include learning Bharatnatyam and other dance forms for the movie Kamaladalam, Kalari for the movie Thacholi Varghese Chekavar, and Kathakali for the movie Vanaprastham. He also did dangerous stunts with flood water in hoginakal for the movie NARAN
