I guess both the movies released today only. I read their reviews on TOI and here they are ..

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na Director: Abbas Tyrewala
Cast: Imran Khan, Genelia, Prateik Babbar, Ratna Pathak
Rating:

There is a girl and there is a boy. Both are extremely different yet are extremely close to each other. Girl is rich, tongue-in-cheek, dominant and aggressive while the boy has had a middle class upbringing and is submissive, soft-spoken and calm. Opposites attract and so do they but not as lovers, as friends! So when do they realize its love?

Abbas Tyrewala definitely comes up with a winner in the form of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. He tells us an ordinary love story, whose theme is Pyaar Dosti Hai (Love is friendship)... a la Kuch Kuch Hota Hai... however presents it in a much mature fashion than its glorious predecessor. He tackles this confused romantic comedy with élan and impresses you with his subtlety in terms of direction. Not a single scene, actor is overly dramatic. The characters are real, identifiable and extremely cute!

Jai (Imran) and Aditi (Genelia) are ‘best friends’ and are extremely possessive of each other but are definitely not in love. They long for each other’s company and still wonder why close friends and parents believe that they are in love! After giving a deep thought both realize its high time they find themselves a special someone too since one cant spend a lifetime with a best friend! However when they do find their respective ‘special someone’ they realize love is not about finding a perfect someone, it’s about feeling perfectly happy with an imperfect partner.

The film is definitely not flawless. There are rough cuts here and there, especially in terms of editing. The film doesn’t have a great beginning but it picks up as it nears the interval, however again slows down in the climax! The pace keeps fluctuating, which at times distracts you, and makes you fidget in your seat. The story too has nothing new to offer.

It is the casting of the film that saves it from being an average just another youth film.
Abbas’s wife Pakhi deserves a standing ovation for her fantastic casting, as it is the choice of actors in the film that makes it so likeable! All the youngsters are understated, thus highly effective. Rotlu, Bombs, Jiggy, Mau (Genelia) and Ratz (Imran)... the nicknames of the characters make you doubt their likeability initially but as the film progresses, each character grows on you and you start becoming a part of the chirpy cute – just out of college gang!

Imran gets a tailor made role for him, as his petite personality and casual attitude makes him fit the bill of Jai perfectly. He struggles with his expressions initially as gets stuck with one ‘surprised raised eye brows’ expression but gets better later on. Genelia overshadows Imran big time. She looks extremely fresh and lights up the screen with her presence. Prateik Babbar, Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak come up with brilliant performances and provide you with all the light moments in the film. Sohail and Arbaaz Khan too tickle your funny bone with their cameos. Imran’s girlfriend Avantika too makes a special appearance in the film. Watch out for her in a disco sitting next to Imran.

Fashion designer Ashley Rebello deserves a special mention as he dresses Imran and Genelia as per their age and makes them look flawless.

Music is youthful, foot tapping and energetic. Kuddos to AR Rahman yet again.

JTYJN definitely deserves a watch... and not just for Imran.

LS-2050 contd on the next post...

Love Story 2050

Director: Harry Baweja
Cast: Harman Baweja, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani
Rating:

Picture this. It’s 2050. The world’s transformed into a screensaver. There are airborne automobiles, robots have substituted companionship and are not just implanted with artificial intelligence but also embedded with fake feelings. Humankind emerge from holograms as customer care executives. Product brands of today manage to survive four decades down the line and perhaps so will the standard of scripts that refuse to show any signs of upgrading.

Picture this. It’s 2006. Filmmaker Harry Baweja considers making a science fiction but assumes that the audience is too inexperienced to accept the genre unconditionally. So he manipulates an obsolete love story believing that the viewer would now digest the assorted subject more willingly. And in his flawed hypothesis he ends up with a muddled mess which is something between a lackluster love story and a semi-science-fiction. Add to it, neither appeals!

Picture this. It’s 2008. Harman Baweja attempts to make a dashing debut (literally) as he bangs his father’s swanky car. Daddy dear is a business tycoon who has no time for his motherless son Karan (Harman). Now how many times have we seen such banal bonding before? Nevertheless, real-life father Harry Baweja has all the time to launch his son (again literally, through flying cars) in a futuristic film which unfortunately isn’t ahead of its time.

Karan meets Sana (Priyanka Chopra), chases, dates and sings with her, gets separated and reunites and attempts every possible act to stretch the screenplay till the interval. The director has dedicatedly devoted the first half merely for the love story. 2050 appears only in the second half where the techno-savvy world comprises of touch-screen gadgets and perhaps India is again ruled by foreigners as most inhabitants of Mumbai resemble firangs .

Sana dies in the first half and our hero is pretty sure that she will be reborn in 2050. His scientist uncle (Boman Irani) who is a confused combination of an astrologer-cum-astronomer reaffirms his faith. Uncle Frankenstein has designed a time machine which transports them into future. Sana is Zeisha now and suddenly the modern day sci-fi takes an ancient Bollywood turn with the reincarnation theme. This Karan has no Arjun but with just one song he rekindles memories of past life in his lifeless romance with Sana.

Meanwhile the director also inserts an archetypal villain though he chooses to keep his face covered for reasons unknown. This faceless bad man looks like the first cousin of Mogambo and suspiciously sounds like Gulshan Grover. Is Grover resorting to barely dubbing for films or did the director midways mistake his film to be an animation attempt? Expectedly, the villain is in search of the time machine which assures a climax combat with the hero.

The screenplay grilled by multiple writers is a clear case of too many cooks spoil the broth. The first half is long-drawn-out with a lousy love story while scenes are specially written in the second half only to accommodate brand endorsements. The special effects are a new high for hindi films. However that doesn’t affect much as the effects are almost relegated to the background while the romance takes preventable prominence. Moreover the visual graphics remind of several Hollywood films like The Fifth Element, Total Recall and The Star Wars series. Also the villain’s vicious intentions are clearly derived from Krrish .

Of the performances, Boman Irani hams hysterically. Priyanka Chopra overdoes the Pooh image to irksome effect. Archana Puran Singh repeats her Punjabi act for the zillionth time. Harman Baweja, intentionally or unintentionally, has a strong Hrithik Roshan hangover in his looks, performance, body-language, mannerisms, action, dancing and dialogue delivery but surprisingly it works to his advantage. In the pre-climax party scene he also derives a lot in his act from Shah Rukh Khan. But a confident charm works to his merit.

Through the film, Harman keeps repeating a line ‘I don’t need luck, I have love’. Perhaps an overdose of love will surely make him seek some luck, now.

Thanks Monsi for posting both the reviews!

After a long time, I feel like watching this movie--Jaane Tu Na Jaane!
I had lost all interest to watch any of the recently released movies. But this one looks like fun with two young actors in the lead and with my fav ARRahman's music.
I listened to the songs, sounds very today and has a fresh sound to it with a lot of old time jazz based tunes.
Don't know if I can make it to the theater though!

Dear Kamla,
You are right! After reading the review I also want to see this movie. am disappointed to read the LS-2050 review though. It looks like bollywood needs some more time to come out with a science fiction success.

Jaane tu is a good time pass movie. the lead actors have done well and look good. the supporting cast is really good to - esp Ratna shah as Imran's mom. Smita Patil's son has done a small role and he looks just like her - in fact in some scenes the resemblence is remarkable (esp as he has long hair as well). overall an enjoyable movie
