The film stars Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. The film is based on the famous Chittagong Conspiracy Case during the Indian freedom movement against British rule. Abhishek Bachchan essays the role of the fearless Bengal revolutionary Surya Sen who was better known as Master da.

    Dear Asha,

The Chittagong (Chattagram) Conspiracy Case refers to the Chittagong Armoury Raid (Chattagram Astragar Lunthan) which was attempted on April 18, 1930 to raid the armoury of police and auxiliary forces from the Chittagong armery in the Bengal province under the British India. Chittagong was in the present-day Bangladesh and the armed revolutionaries were led by Surya Sen, who was known as Masterda.:bowdown

The revolutionary groups believed in armed uprisings for liberating India from the exploitative and oppressive British colonial rule.

Apart from Surya Sen, the armery raid group comprised of people like Ganesh Ghosh, Ambika Chakraborty, Nirmal Sen and Lokenath Baul.

The armoury raid group also had Pritilata Waddedar, Kalpana Dutta, Jiban Ghosal, Naresh Roy, Sasanka Datta, Ardhendu Dastidar, Ananta Singh, Tarakeshwar Dastidar, Harigopal Baul, Anand Gupta and Subodh Roy. Subodh was a 14-yr-old teenager at that time. He passed away in August 2006.

Masterda Surya Sen was the strategy-maker. He devised the plan of capturing the two major armouries in Chittagong and then destroying the telephone and telegraph office. He also planned to assassinate the members of the European Club, most of whom were military or government officials involved in the British Rule in India. He also planned to raid the firearms retailers and disrupt the rail and communication lines.

Ashutosh Gowariker is a man of many talents. He is director, actor, writer and producer all rolled into one. Before his foray into directing films, Ashutosh was a popular TV actor. I remember watching him in the Zee TV horror show WOH and the popular crime detection serial CID. In fact apart from these two serials, Ashutosh has also acted in Kachchi Dhoop and Circus.
He has also starred in popular Hindi films like Naam (starring Sanjay Dutt) , Chamatakar and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Ashutosh Gowariker has won one National Film Award and 5 Filmfare Awards. Here is wishing him luck when his new movie releases on 3rd December.

The plan devised by Master-da Surya Sen was put into action at 10 o’clock on April 18, 1930.

The police armoury was captured by a group of revolutionaries led by Sri Ganesh Ghosh. Another group of ten was led by Sri Lokenath Baul. This group took over the Auxiliary Force armoury. Experiencing bad luck, they could not locate the sought-after ammunition. A total of 65 revolutionaries took part in the Chittagong Raid, which was undertaken in the name of the Indian Republican Army, Chittagong Branch. They succeeded in dislocating telegraph and telephone communications and disrupting the movement of trains.

The youngest member was Subodh Roy whom Piya has written about.

Let’s all wish Asutosh All the Best for the upcoming movie!!:thumbsup:cheers He loves to pay tribute to the historic times through his films and the previous period films that he had made were excellent:bowdown. I have seen many period movies, but never one like Jodha Akbar. Asutosh Gowarikar’s meticulous direction and eye for intricate details breathe life into his movies.
Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is the first movie ever made on the Chittagong Raid Case:thumbsup:thumbsup. There is a host of movies on the Indian Freedom Fighters and especially on Shahid Bhagat Singh and his friends, but the Chittagong Case has always remained unexplored, till now.

Just back from watching the movie. Abhishek Bachchan plays the role of Surya Sen( Master da). As other Ilites, have said in this thread, there is a whole gamut of historical characters besides Master da in the film -- there is Pritilata (played by Vishaka Singh) , and Kalpana Dutta (Deepika Padukone) and Nirmal Sen (Sikandar Kher).
I must say that Ashutosh Gowariker has done a good job in the film. Mind you it isn't easy to handle desh bhakti- you can easily go over the top. But Ashutosh has done his job with restraint, and the viewer easily gets involved in the thrill and romance of the planning and execution of the armoury raid. Ashutosh has kept the period flavour intact and one gets a peek into the life and times of the fabled Bengali revolutionaries whose efforts and sacrifices played a big role in the national freedom movement.
On the whole I would say quite a good movie.
