Default Income tax on NRI's salary

Hi everybody,

Is it must that NRI's money sent to India, is liable/accountable for the payment of Income Tax in INDIA?
What is the Income Tax strategy for the money sent to India by an NRI?

Please help me out.

MAdhuri,

If you are asking about remittances into india, you are not liable to pay any tax if you remit it to a nre account.

There are two types of account
NRO
NRE

NRO account if you transfer money there is no tax on prinicipal. And also you can bring the money back from India to foreign country. But you cannot deposit money in India
NRE account if you transfer money and if it earns interest you have to pay tax for the interest and not for prinicipal. In this account you can put money in Indian currency also.

Hope this clarifies. The tax for the money will be paid in only one country. As long your transfering after tax money then that money will not be taxed in other currency. This may not be tru if you exchange money in airports.

Thanks
Mangai
