Hello, i have a clarification! does pressure cooking the rice and boiling and draining the rice(old method) are same(do they have same effect?)? the second method,i heard that all the bad carbs will be drained whereas in the first method, since we are pressure cooking the rice, all the carbs will be within the rice..is it true? thanks ramya

I also like to drain the rice while cooking. But don't u think we loose some minerals and protein by draining the water. Somehow in my mind I am agianist of drianing the water.... We indians, basically vegetarians. Even if we eat Non veg that will be occasinally. In the end we depend upon rice for the energy. So my question is if drianing causes the loss of minerals then why we should do it? I got a link for this to clarify: The nutritional difference between fast-cooked and slow-cooked rice - Cooking (Other) - Helium - by Gill Breeze Please tell me do we loose some minerals and protein by drianing the water while cooking. Regards srilak

hi all, thanks for the information and replies.i can agree that draining water after boiling it looses minerals..but we can get those minerals from other food sources right ?if draining the water removes bad carbs means,is that a good info..for all of us? inputs please..... thanks ramya

I remember reading that it is a good idea for people on a diet to remove excess starch by draining rice. On the other hand, for most normal people, it is advisable to not do so, since it a chief energy source for vegetarians. By the way, in the olden days, didn't people drink this stuff (kanji??) So, if you are not obese, please don't drain rice. Also remember, due to processing and polishing we lose the water soluble vitamins. There is no need to get rid of carbs as well. My two cents :)

Pour some water in the pressure cooker. Take a vessel with lid which will fit inside the pressure cooker. Add how much ever rice you normally cook. Add 2 parts water (one and half part if its basmati rice). Pour a little oil or ghee over the water. Close the vessel with lid and put in on the stove (medium flame). For me, it takes 15 min for 1 whistle to blow. Thats enough time for the rice to be cooked. You'll need to tweak the timing and water according to the rice you use. |
