Question Guacomole / Avocado

Hi,

I have tasted Guacomole in the mexican restaurants here in the US. It tastes good as a side with all mexican food - tortillas, burittos and even corn chips!

I know the main ingredient is avacodas mashed into a chutney like, but what else are to be added to get that flavor and taste?

Please do let me know if anyone here know this recipe, especially those in the US.

Post That's an easy recipe

Hi Sheeba,

Guacomole is very easy to make. Here is the recipe that I got from a cooking magazine. I have tried the same and it came out good. Not only with mexican tortillas, it tastes good with hot and soft chappathis too

Ingredients:

Ripe avacodas - 1 or 2
Lemon - 1/2
Sour cream - 2
G.chilies - 3
Onion - 1/2
Salt to taste

Peel the skin, remove off the seed and mash the avacodas (ripe ones can just be mased with a big spoon or blend it in a blender). Chop finely the g.chilies and onions and mix it with mashed avacodas. Add sour cream, lime juice, salt and mix well.

That's it.

Hi Sheeba,

In addition to the ingredients mentioned by Rathi, add these too to make it more spicy!

1/4 tspn coarse black pepper powder
a few finely chopped cilantro (coriander) leaves

Just before serving you can also add 1/2 tomato finely chopped, if you like it to be slightly sour.

Enjoy!

Post Avocado Salsa

Hi Vidhyalakshmi,

Avocados are rich in potassium and helps to reduce blood pressure. It also contains an acid called oliec acid that helps reduce cholesterol. It is also rich in dietary fibre.

You can try making avocado salsa. I got this recipe from a cooking magazine. This is again a mexican dish served in mexican restaurants along with the corn chips for dipping.

Ingredients:

Ripe Avocado - 1
Tomato - 1
Corn kernels - 1/2 cup
Cilantro (coriander) little
Lime juice from 1 lime
Black Pepper powder
Salt
Red pepper powder (optional)
Jalopenos - 3 (optional)

Combine mashed avocado, chopped tomato and corn kernels with finely chopped cilantro and lime juice. Toss them together gently. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

For a even more spicier salsa, season with red pepper powder and chopped jalapenos.

Cool Avocado Custard

I downloaded this recipe from a website (not sure exactly the name of the site) and have tried it. Came out really well!

Avocado Custard
Ingredients
2 ripe avocados
1 tin condensed milk
1/2 cup water
sugar ( optional)
Straw berries to garnish
Method
- Scoop the avocados, leaving aside the skin and seed.
- Mix with condensed milk and blend in a blender or food processor.
- Add water and mix it untill creamy.
- Add sugar (if needed)
- Ganish with strawberries
Note:
Use very ripe avocados as they give a more sweeter taste.
Sugar is added only if needed as condensed milk is very sweet.

Default Menu suggestions?

I wonder if you ladies could help me with menu suggestions. My husband is coming home this evening after a short business trip. These are always trying for him as we are veg and he finds food on the road very unappealing.

He likes Sweet and Sour Tomatoes very much and I got some very nice tomatoes from my father's garden so I will be making these for him tonight. I will also make chapatis because he mentioned the other day that he was getting tired of rice. Can anyone recommend Dals and other subzis that might go well?

Would Sukhi Moong be appropriate or something else? I can cook quite a few Indian dishes but still have some trouble knowing what foods go well together.

Thanks very much for your help.

Namaste-

Jennie (Janki)

Default Moong

Dear Jennie,

Hope i will be of some help to u by posting this recipe.

U mentioned moong, i have a very tasty recipe of moong which goes very well with chapathi. It is quite simple too so u can try it out.

Ingredients

Whole green gram - moong - 1/2 a cup - soaked in warm water for 2 to 3 hours.
Chopped onions - 3 to 4
Tomatoes - 1 (chopped and it is optional, only if u like a tangy taste to the dal)Green chillies - 3 to 4 (or as per the level of spiciness u r used to)
Chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
OIl - 1 table spoon
Cumin seeds - 1 spoon
Salt to taste
Fresh cream - 1 spoon (optional, u can add a spoon of full cream milk powder instead)
water - 2 1/2 cups
Cilantro for garnish

Method
  • Pressure cook the green gram with water and green chillies. 3 whistles would suffice.
  • In a wok, heat the oil and add the cumin seeds and allow spluttering.
  • Add the chopped onions and fry till golden brown, with a little salt.
  • Once the onions are done add the tomatoe, cooked green gram, chilli powder and salt and set to boil on a medium heat, stirring at frequent intervals. U may need to boil for around 10 minutes.
  • Check the water and add more if needed. (it should be like a gravy)
  • Before taking off the fire, add the cream and mix well.
  • Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro.
  • Best served hot with roti or chapathi.
Do try it out and post me a feedback.
