HI dear,
am sorry to hear about your daughter, but diabetes is not a disease it can be controlled, and al ot of people are suffering from it.

1. you need to ask the doctors to talk to her and make her understand what she has
2. you need to also be patient and strong for her
3. please inform her school and also ask the school nurse to check her sugar and note it
down for you and help your daughter to take the insulin
4. talk to a clinical diabetic nutritionist about her diet
5. make her exercise like running in the park and so on.
6. she has to leave with it and my dad has been suffering from diabetes for the past
27yrs,he has just been put on insulin
7. your daughter should have alt least 5 to 6 small meals a day
8. She should not be stressed at all, try not stress her and also at the same time try not
let her have her way, some times what happens children tend to get away like this and
start to throw tantrums,
9. I am sure there must be couselling for children who suffer from diabetes, take her to it
so she can meet other children who suffer from it, it would make her feel that she is
not the only one suffering from it.
10. Make her drink lots of wate at least start with a litre, this is becasue the urine will help
to bring the sugar level down and avoid giving her any sugar free items as they ahve
hidden sugar in it.
11. keep a diary and note what she has for breakfast, lunch and dinner, potatoes and rice
should be avoided
12. She ahs to take her injections and medications at the exact time everyday.
13. Try to make her swim everyday for an hour it will really help her in burning her sugar,
by doing swimming she may become a good swimmer and take part in various
competition, my dad still walks and swims for an hour each he is 74 yrs now

i am not trying to scare you but just helping you as she is only 8yrs old. wishing you good luck and do not scare your daughter. She will be able tofight this and you need to be mentally strong.

love
alpa

Sams:

First of all sorry to hear what your dd is undergoing. My hugs to you.

A suggestion from me...Please consider trying homeopathy or ayurveda form of treatment.Though they are long term but she is only 8yrs. Though these forms of alternate medicines have no quick relief but with diet alterations and exercises meant specially for kids like yoga for kids etc you can do away with the allopathy medicines which have side effects in the long run.
Please consider these alternate medicines but you can first consult your doctor too and by introducing the alternate form of medicines slowly you can do away with allopathy. There are excellent doctors for alternate medicines in India.
There are excellent nature cure centres in India too.
Give her emotional and moral support. Tell you are with her and give her courage.

Adara

Hugs for the little one. I can imagine how difficult it would be for her to make those adjustments. HAve you tried local support groups. I see you live in the US, it maybe worth the while to check out if there are other parents in real life who have to deal with these, have positive role models for her.
Hang in there mommy, the first few days when you make those adjustments will be difficult, but you will make that transition. Good luck.

Hi sams, I think kids emotionally very strong and we should make sure that the thought of having some health problem should not enter her mind as she may distract from studies or make this reason for not studying.

I myself as kid did that. I had this tonsillitis problem and get throat infection. If i didn't have any reason for not studying i say its paining. I escaped from studies many times.

Otherwise plz take professional guidance for this too.

hugs to the little darling...
dont worry dear, follow these simple steps
1.stop discussing about her disease when she is around
2.be consistent in her diet and exercise
3.there is no cure for diabetes.beware of quacks
4.give her small frequent meals, lots of veggies
5.type 1 diab is fluctuates like hell unlike the one in elderly.hence u have to test her blood frequently(but i haven't heard >4 times is necessary).if u need a second opinion,u have to consult a paediatric endocrinologist
6.encourage exercise,30 min a day
7.examine her feet and toes every night(ideally after she has slept).look for abrasions or calluses which may get infected
8.dont permit bare foot walking
9.examine her inner wear for vaginal discharge.diabetic kids are prone to develop fungal infection of the genitalia.frequent washing with a mild soap and drying will help in prevention
10.get her renal function(urine albumin, blood urea and creatine done every 6 mo)
an ophthalmological examination is mandatory.
11.avoid hypoglycemia.always keep a card with her stating the nature of her illness.
12.educate her to take a spoon or more of glucose when she feels tired or if she has sweating, palpitation and faintness(signs of dipping glucose)

life is a bed of roses and thorns dear!

my prayers....
