Default Cord blood storage

Hai,

How many of you have stored or decided to store your baby's umbilical cord blood? Why did you choose to do so? How much did it cost to store and for how many years? Do you feel guilty for not storing cord blood?

We are deciding on storing cord blood for my cousin's wife. So please provide answers and help us decide.

Amitha

Thanks Vanathi,

You have given wonderful explanation. Seems like it is very expensive. Let's see what they will decide.

This is one of those schemes to cash on new parents psychology. I believe it is a waste of money. Here is why:
1) the chances of a healthy child needing a stem cell transplant in 21 years is very very small (look around how many people do you know that got fatally sick before they turned 21 and could have benefited from stem cell transplant).
2) Even more developed countries like USA have problems with storing more defined and isolated cells for 21 years!! Here the cord blood companies are talking about storing unpurified stem cells for 21 years in India) !! Bottomline, we do not have a fool proof technology to save cord blood cells for that long.
3) There is not enough research to support their claims that these cells can completely cure any disease yet!!
You will be better of by investing that 70 or so thousands, that will give you enough money to use most update treatment modality for the day you need!
