Question Picking up English

Hi Moms,

I have a 3 1/2 year old daughter. She was born in US and she was going to daycare from when she was 6 months old. So she picked up english better than our native language. Even though she understood every word in our native language, she would reply only in english. This was the situation until February of this year. We went to India in Feb and left her with our parents for 3 1/2 months (vacation). Now she is back here. She is totally talking in our native language. We are very very happy to hear her talk in our language. At the same time we are a little concerned 'cos she completely forgot talking in english. She again understands everything in english but replies only in our native language. We are thinking of sending her to school here and we fear that she might pull herself back at school because of her inability to express herself in english.

Has anyone undergone the same situation. How long did it take before your child became conversant in english and did your child experience a lot of difficulties ? Did you do something special to help the situation ?

Please share your experiences. It would be a great help.

Thank you.

I personally feel at this young age they won't forget a language.Maybe after school starts it will be a weeks time she will go back to her english speaking mode.Their brain is like a sponge. So it will absorb everything .Don't worry

Hi,

No kids of this age forget anything what they learn irrespective of the nature. If they start getting accustomed to school envmnt they will come out of this problem.Nothing to worry.
