Default Contact Lens User Be Careful

A 21 year old guy, he used to wear a pair of contact lenses, during a barbecue party.
While, barbecuing he stared at the fire charcoals continuously for 2-3 minutes. After a few minutes,
he started to scream for help and moved rapidly, jumping up and down. No one in the
party knew why he was doing this ? Then he admitted into the Hospital, the doctor
said he'll be blind permanently because of the contact lenses that he had worn.
Contact lenses are made by plastics, and the heat from the charcoal melted his contact lenses.

So, send this information to all your friends..... DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES WHERE
OVERHEATING AND FLAMES ARE CONCERNED.....OR WHILE COOKING...!

Hi Teju
What information you have put in is right we should not be in direct contact with the heat the way this guy was or a person is sure to face this problem.
I am using contact lens from more then 25 yrs but by God's grace never faced any problems till today.
You can wear while cooking but you should be careful and take precautions like your eyes don't get direct heat.

Dear all,

I received a forwarded email that advised people who wear contacts to keep away from very hot heat sources (i.e. fires). Supposedly some guy's contact lenses melted when he was BBQ-ing, which caused him to become blind.

I'm rather skeptical about this message (as I am with most forwards of this kind... who makes these things up!!! A lot of them are obviously fake!), so I looked up the materials and melting point of contact lenses (both rigid gas permeable/hard and hydrogel/soft kinds) online but didn't find much information.
(Found something about melting point of contacts at approx. 54-72 deg. C...)

I was wondering if anyone can advise on the likelihood of contacts melting in one's eyes...with a little irritation the contact will first come out of the eye......it will not stay there to melt...

I am using contacts for several years, (almost 10 years).
Regards.

Hi Meeta
In case you are in front of direct heat for a long time there is possiblity of irritation first, if not taken care of it, it is possible to melt. In case of hard and semi soft lens as soon as you feel irritated the lenses are suppose to come out, but in case of soft lens it will not come out as it is very soft. These type of problems arise in case of soft lens and standing in front of the BBQ for a very long time. Not only BBQ any type of heat.
