Hi Bornfree It is a very good idea for both men and women to get a medical check-up before marriage. I think it is essential to be frank and open and only fair to let the other person know what they are in for before marriage than after marriage. It will surely reduce the divorce rates ! I recently heard (from a reliable source) that the maximum amount of hiv patients belonged to the software field and the majority from Tamilnadu (obviously Chennai would have the max percentage). Shocking, isn't it ? But I would suggest not checking just for hiv and std's, as there are other ailments as well. If one has the frame of mind to deal with such situations then there would be no problems, but if one is not understanding enough to cope, it would cause unnecessary tension between a couple which could jeopardise their happiness together.

It is a great if people would understand the benefits of getting a pre medical check up.But imagine implementing it in our society right now, imagine a scenario where the bride's family asks the groom to go for a check up, I am sure you can imagine the uproar that would cause, the same would happen if the groom's family demanded the same of the bride. I think it would be more better if the govt made it necessary to submit medical reports in order to get their marriage certificate.Would that work? Nikky

Hi guys, This is really a good idea and very useful........... In my case, I a getting married to my uncles daughter ( Mother's brother daughter) shortly...... I saw cases where there are genetic problems to the children who were born to the parents who got married like me.So i am confused and decided to go for pre marriage tests.... and i have suggested the same to my family members n they too agreed.... thing now is what type of medical tests to be done ... and who is the concerned doctor to contact...? If any one could help me out in getting this information, it would be really helpful to me.... Thanx in advance...

Parahusha, you can go to a good gynaecologist in Pune and discuss your concerns. I am not sure about the level of genetic testing done in India. In the US, at my pre-natal checkup (when I was planning baby #1), my ob-gyn told me about genetic testing available here. There may be something similar available at good hospitals there. It is even more important since you are going to be marrying a close relative.
