How do you feel about the new minimum wage for maids set by the Rajasthan government?

    The new rates:
    • Rs 5642/month for 8 hrs/day (includes cooking, washing, babysitting).
    • Overtime will be double the wage per hour.
    • Rs 705/month for dishes and laundry for 4 people in the house.
    • 10% more per additional person over 4.
    • Food, clothes, accommodation, perks are in addition to wage.
    • If you're already paying more than this, you must continue with the higher wage.

At the moment, this is just for Rajasthan, but I imagine it will spread country wide. How would this impact the average household in your area if you're in India? Can most people afford these rates? Or will women opt to fire their maids and use appliances instead?

The Union labor ministry wants a minimum salary of Rs 9000/month, paid leave of 15 days/year plus maternity leave and Social Security. This has not yet been implemented, but is in the works.

I didn't know we had Social Security in India? Does everyone have an SSN? I feel so hopelessly out of touch some days.

Good for maids. Rates looks reasonable for me, 705 for 4 people. But this is also possible in the long run, if maid doesn't work professionally.

I would ask for a minimum wage to manage the maid. :)

True. Minimum wage is much more reasonable than the existing wages that we pay maids... And fixed wage does not give them a chance to bargain or demand money.

The wages are very reasonable but will any maid agree to work for these rates as, as all are demanding double or triple of the salary structure mentioned in beginning..also..paid leave of 15 days is also ok..but Maternity leave? How many days and how often? This should be outlined clearly to avoid misuse.. Giving birth to a baby every year just to get the leave is not good for the woman's reproductive health . Also pregnancy and delivery expenses? Who will pay for the deliveries..and social security number , even I'm unaware of such a system in our country..

These wages can not be applicable for all the states as the cost of living varies in each state. These wages seem to be far less than what is being paid even in small towns in tamilnadu. But it is a good initiative, which other states can also follow.
