hello all, i have been married for 10 months now. Despite being an arranged marriage, ours is not registered by law. we got married in chennai but now living in mumbai. i understand that though we are married, im not his legally wedded wife and thus, neither he nor i would be entitled for any claim of property or money or anything for that matter if our marriage is not registered by law? ofcourse none of this would matter more than the loss of my husband or my loss for my husband. but still thinking practically on the long term, wouldnt it be necessary to register our marriage? but, i have had my name changed in the gazette wherein i have my husband's name attached to mine. will this be of any help if at all i dont register our marriage? or further still, after this name change, can we register our marriage? my name is already changed, under what name should i register our marriage? will the name change be still valid? where should the registration be done- here in mumbai or in chennai where we got married? and how long is the procedure going to take? i will be grateful to people who help me answer my queries. thank you in advance. all my love, priya.

Dear sugarloaf n spice, do not worry about this. You can register your marriage next time you visit Chennai. I got married in 87 and got it registered only in 94 for some legal reasons. The registration is isisted for the safety of the wife. But I am sure that you have a very nice husband. So register when you come ovr. Varloo

Hi, I recently got my marriage registered, though I got married in 2003. I think it will work the same way in Chennai too. You just need to approach your local corporation or registrar office in your area where you have permanent address. Get the marriage registration form filled out, notarized and provide atleast 2 address proof documents that includes both you & your husband's name like Ration card, voter's card, bank account passbook, etc. Sometimes they might expect some few bucks in addition to the registration fees (the common one with Indian Govt.!) Good luck with marriage registration. Thanuja

i want to marry my lover , i want to get married in a temple. but i want to register my marriage before to be on the safet side. so plz guide me. give me details about register marriage.

Hi, Here are some details about registering your marriage. As others have said you need to get application, 3 witness, etc. But if you want to get registered before you get married, then you may have to wait for a month. You have to give in the application filled, with 3 witness sign. And they will display a notice in the registrar office for a month to see if there is any objection for this marriage. And on the date they have specified you have to visit the registrar's office along the 3 witness who signed. Then you can get the certificate. But I hope you can get it done in single day if you pay money. I have heard of few friends who got it in single day that too before their marriage happened in a temple or somewhere else. All the best Cheers, Malar

But it is told that it would suffice if one got a certificate from the temple where the marriage was conducted and in that case registration in the Registrar's office not necessaray .Whether the certificate issued by the temple woule be accepted for all purposes and wherever the proof of marriage is required? | Hi onezten, The certificate issued by the temple would not be considered as a legal one. For all purposes like going abroad, changing ur name after marrigae etc, you would require a legal marriage certificate issued by the marriage registrar. This certificate can be obtained on the basis of the temple marriage certificate. These days there are many agencies around which do this for an amount of around 1000/- or so. So we are saved from the hassles of standing in the queue etc. hope this info answered your query.... Cheers Sona Last edited by sonasanju; 22nd September 2008 at 01:11 AM. |
