As you said in fashion conscious get togethers in my neck of the woods too people stopped wearing gold ornaments. As much as i know these type of jewellery with good care last for a long time and over time are cheap conssidering the huge amounts you have to spend for the real things. Unless one's taste is towards traditional with trends changing so often artificial seems the way to go. They might have exhibits in other places (one is upcoming in virginia)

1 gm jewelry now doesnt exist at all. these jewelers cheat you in the name of 1 gm gold so dont fall for them. just ask them a simple question if u want to varify that" if u melt the set of bangle in nitric acid will you get 1 gm gold." pls note gold is a nobel metal and in a fresh set of 1 gm gold bangle if u melt it in nitric acid will give u at least 900 mgs of gold.
instead go for good quality plated jewelry of same design and ask them to give a guarantee of durability.

The shop porkoodam in madurai is jus oppposite to Amman Sanathi entrance of Meenakshi amman temple.I have visited there once and there a few good designs there.

In chennai GRT has a seperate shop for this kind of designer jewllery.Its in TNagar and the location is i think its jus behind GRT.I have bought one gram gold from there twice and its good and the price is also reasonable.

i think there is definately a resale value for one gram gold ornaments
when i bought mine in kerala , the shop keeper said when i want to sell the necklaces then i will get the value of the one gram gold what ever the day's prices were.
i bought two necklaces, bangles and i wear them with my american dresses.
and they are deliacate and hold well.
i also got a multi colored necklace which wear all the time.
the sliver rodium plated stuff also iahve a few. from mumbai. they are great but they tend to break if we are not careful as silver is very fine metal . seconly yu may have to go back and hve it polished to shine better.
that has been my experience so far.
i have had all these for the past 5 years now
