i like gowri hotel at bye-pass road..whenever i visit my inlaws house my MIL takes me there..The food is toooo gud..Even modern restaurant is worth a visit..

Madurai has lot of good restaurants suitable for everyones taste.

Vegetarian - Arya bhavan,Nagalakshmi Annexe( the tomato rice here is spl)

Non-veg - Amsavalli bhavan(no one can beats its biryani taste)

Taj Hotel- Very good NV items
Raabiya
You can get Jigardanta in many madurai town areas..

Temple city restaurant in Melur road is quite good - variety with taste. There is Vazhai for the non-veg lovers ( nadappana, parappana and midhappana)
North gate in Tallakulam
Various messes catering to the non veg with mouthwatering food - also in Tallakulam.

As for the star rated
Pandian hotel on Alagar koil Road
GRT in Palanganatham

Recently A Punjabi Dhaba has come into existence; on sundays it's so crowded we've never been there. It shd. be good I guess.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I have been to some in your list, will try others when I come there next month.

I still remember my childhood days when i used to travel from karaikudi to virudhunagar via madurai. As my mama was in madurai we used to go there. He used to take us to Amsavalli and used to eat NV food. Yummmy. But somehow when i went there last time, the place wasn't that good, i mean the environment. But that place tastes the same:).

So my tick goes to Amsavalli bhavan at Near Chinthamani Cinema Hall

There are very few 3 or 4 star hotels in madurai.

You can try Taj in Pasumalai.

Park plaza near the railway station is good. bUt it is not a 4 star hotel.

For sombu, you can make a try in anantha vessels near the temple and pudu mandapam area near the temple.

Most of the hotels add garlic.

You can try Sriram mess(i am not sure about the exact location).Food is good and homely compared to other places.
You get good coffee in visalam(it is also a small shop but very good).
