    Epidural - Yes or No?

    Hi Friends,

As many might know, I am expecting a baby boy soon. I would love to see a thread where everyone can share their experiences on epidural. It would greatly guide anyone (me being first) trying to deliver a baby. Some of the specifics I am thinking that we can share are ....

..did you take epidural during labor?
..what other options were provided to you along with epidural?
..when did you decide to take epidural? At what cm?
..what made you to decide on epidural? Just pain alone?
..what are your husband's thoughts on you taking epidural?
    ..did it prolong your labor?
..how long after epidural was your baby born?
..did you ever end up in a situation where the doctor wanted to do C-Section after you have taken epidural?
..did you feel anything with your epidural? or complete numbness.
..is epidural offered in India? If not, what's the equivalent?

    Thank you friends.

    Dear Varshini,

Congrats and all the best for the days to come. I don't have children myself, but know that in India ,there are hospitals that offer total pain free deliveries. Like in Trivandrum, these hospitals are always crowded for this Pain Managed deliveries.

I live in Holland and here we have only home births and no epidurals. There is no choice at all.

    Good luck.
    love

    Epidurals

    Hi Varshini,

I have two kids. Both delivered normally. I did not take epidural. I have heard that it causes problems like back ache etc later on. Also since there is no sensation below the hip, the delivery time is prolonged( not sure just heard ). I took some minor pain medications during labor. ( do not recall the name) But it was enough to let me rest till the time to do all the hard work came. Also the nurses/midwives here give you a lot of hotpacks to ease the pain in your back.

Having said this, if you decide to take epidural, you will have to inform your doc that you want it well in advance. Once you are fully dilated, and ready to deliver. at that time they will not give it.

Once you have taken the epidural, and a csection needs to be done. No probs. here in the US, c sections are done using only epidural or spinal anesthesia. So you will be awake during the procedure, but no sensation from abdomen and below.

All said and done, if you can go through with the delivery with out the epidural , then go for it. All your pain vanishes as soon as you deliver. Most ladies take epidural only because of the labor pains/contractions.

Good luck with you delivery and all the best.

    Dear Varshini

Congrats and Good luck with your delivery. I have two kids both delivered by c-section. The first one I went into labor and I had decided to take epidural because I could not bear with the pain and it was a prolonged labor. I ended up having a last minute c-section. I did not plan on taking epidural since at that time I had no information. But looking at my pain, the doctor adviced me to take epidural. It made a lot of difference as I could focus well. I had no complications from my epidural later on.

The second was a planned c-section due to some personal reasons. As Vandhana mentioned I had anesthesia so there was no need for epidural. From my personal experience given a choice I will definitely go for epidural. But again it is ones own choice. I know they do have epidurals in India since my sister had one. But everything said and done you want to have a HEALTHY BABY!

    Once again Good luck!
    Love,

any medicine has its own side effects....

    hai varshini,
congrats, during my grandma's days who delivered nearly 12 of them no such painkillers...more human involved and lots of castor oil...they waited for the muscles to dilate and for the baby to comethey made her squat on the floor with holding onto a rope hanging from roof a lady stands behind and make her sit on the standing lady's legs and the dayi works with castroil and wait for the baby to come here nowadays no one has the patience and sometime they cut across very deep and u lose sexual life after delivery ....i suggest u go in for the c section as nowadays no one bothers delivering more than 2 and with c section i am sure 3 is allowed and as it is in the bikini line no scar shown outside...and u need to work out for ur tummy which u will either way do.....best of luck regards sunkan

    Epidurals

    Hi,

I delivered a baby girl sometime last year. Mine was a normal deivery and by Gods grace there were no complications both for myself as well as my baby. Since it was my first delivery i didnt know how painful it willbe etc. I was a bit insecure. Soi asked doctor for epidurals. SHe flatly refused saying she willdecide whether i needed epidurals or not and asked me toforget abt it.

Epidural cases have prolonged deliveries and tiresome too. And extreme professionalism is required by the nurses/doctors to inject it. If any small mistake is made, the spinal chord is damagedfor good. Why do u want to take a risk? Deliveries are painful, but bearable. Once you see your baby, you forget the entire painthe next second. Pls be as nautural as possible and have a happy and a safe delivery!

    All the very best!

    Purnima

    Hi varshini,
Epidurals have side effects for some people only. So many ladies are just fine
after having epidurals. It is true that if you use epidural, it may prolong the labour.
You can inform your doctor beforehand that you may need an epidural (if you decide so). You can opt for epidural until your dilation reachs 7 cms. You have to decide within that limit. Beyond that they won`t give you an epidural.
If you are interested you can go to the website www.sakthifoundation.org
and go to pregnancy pages, there is a lot ot information regarding childbirth, delivery etc.
    Best wishes for your delivery.

    Hi,
Congrats on your baby. I had a baby in 2003 and I went for an epidural. It worked out pretty well for me. I had a c-section. Recovery was pretty good for me. So far I haven't experienced and side effects and I if I have a baby again I will go for the epidural. When I was dilated 4-5 cms I asked for an epidural. I had a big baby and my labour did not progress so the decided to do a c-section. I mainly chose the epidural because I wanted to use the pain relief offered. Why go through pain when there is an alternative. That is my opinion.

    Good Luck.

    taking epidural

    Hi Varshini, :wave

I have just joined this site and I don't know if you are already a mom, in which case congratulations! I just wanted to sare my epidural experience. I had a c-section after taking the epidural. The c-section was necessary because of complications in my delivery while I asked for the epidural because I just couldn't take the pain. My husband was with me while I decided to go for it. The epidural certainly made the whole process much more bearable! Though it has be be injected very carefully by a specialist in your spine. So be sure to have a doctor u trust.

    Love,
    Palak

Epidural or general anaesthesia for c-section

    Hi everyone,
What are the pros & cons for anaesthesia choice during c-section
My SIL is due after 10 days--Age 35yrs,borderline diabetes,2nd issue after unfortunately 1st child died due to brain tumor..at age 9 yrs..
Now my SIL has to make a choice..the gynac is insisting on epidural but.. will taking GA put her child up for more risk than epidural..
Is her risk more than average if SIL goes in for GA given the other circumstances?

Any personal experiences in this regard are eagerly awaited
    BYE,

    Archana
