Hi every1 @ IL, This is Papiya from Boston, Massachusetts. You know, I am terribly missing all that fun and festivity we used to have back home in Kolkata. I am hoping visiting the city shortly to meet my parents. I wonder what is going on in there all this winter? Usually it is the best time for the fairs. Are you Kolkata girls out there know about any lovely ‘melas’ that I could touch down on when I go there? My husband too is looking forward to some Bengali brand of entertainment.
Please tell me where to go and when to go. I want to have some real FUN, gals! Is the Boi Mela on now?
You haven’t forgotten about the hot topics of Kolkata, it seems! Fairs are definitely going on here... lively and colorful as ever. Good that you are coming back - it will taste even more sweeter in your tongue! Kolkata Book Fair is in its prime - its there till Feb 8th This time the venue has shifted to the grounds opposite to Science City, off the Bypass. I am sure you will love to plunge amid the book-crazy crowd and have a great time in the stalls. If not books, the dust, music, junks and open-air paintings are definitely something you are going to carry back to Boston.
Thanks Mousumi, I definitely had the Kolkata Book fair in mind when I posted my query... after all, who can forget Kolkata's own Boi Mela? What I want to know is the facts related to it, like the opening and closing times... and you know the rest. Also, I want to drop down to the other fairs too... I have such a weakness for our ‘desi’ joy rides. So, let me know about the other fairs and their particulars as well. Thanks for replying, any way... keep up the lovely contributions, girls.
Hello dear Papiya, You really seem to be crazy about Kolkata fairs, good for you...I like you all the more for that. Well, I am a resident of North Kolkata and can tell you about the fairs going on in this part of the city. Don’t miss the ‘Swanirbhar Mela’ near Kaikhali, just beside the big Haldiram outlet. It is easy to reach and you can access it via V.I.P Road. The fair has opened on 1st Feb and will remain till 14th. Visit it after 10 am and it will not close until late in the evening. I am sure you and your hubby will have enough time to enjoy yourselves there.
Dear, You’re a bit late. Most of the fairs like Bidhan Mela, Yuba Mela, Trade Fair, Khadyo Mela are over. The grandest of the all ... the Book Fair is still on till Feb 8th. This year we did not have circuses in Calcutta too... Sooooo Sad!
Hi Papiya, I recently came across the Flower Fair going on in Eden Gardens. It was a lovely sight to see so many flowers together. I wonder if you have a same fondness for blossoms... I just loved it and visited it more than once with my family. I don’t know whether you will get to see this remarkable riot of colors when you actually step down in Kolkata - but I do wish that you could.
Regards, Saradia Ray
Hello Papiya,
Are you still on your fair shopping spree? Then here is another Kolkata fair to add to your kitty. I’m talking about the ‘Porjoton Mela’. Have you heard of it before? I swear I didn’t - I plan to visit it soon; my friends told me it will immensely interest those who regularly are into traveling. Are you that eternal tourist? Then do not miss this chance to give your imagination a free run. The fair will remain for the 21st and 22nd of Feb, 09... that gives you not enough time to ponder.
Hurry... GO before it ends. Have fun dear. Love,
Aparna
