Hi all,
I wanted to know if someone knows how to crochet for saree edges or in dress edges.I think u must have all seen these types.I dont know whether they do the borders and stitch them or they directly do in the dress.I have seen some dupattaas and dress ,where they have done directly. But how they do this? Have they got special needle to pierce the cloth???Pls. give me info. about this. If someone have done pls upload photos and instructions.Thankyou.

Nitya,
Crocheting borders, is very interesting,
method 1.
you need to pick up sticthes, trhough the saree, duppattas, you need to use a steel hook, the number could be 2/3, since it is thin, and pick up the threads, Dmc thread is the best. check for colour running before starting.

You could adapt lot of patterns for the same. finish the pattern with a tassel of the same colour which gives a great look.
method 2.

make the pattern for the desired length. check for the tension, and then attach it to the saree/duppatta, as you would attach a lace.

I have done for a few kerchiefts, and for dupattas, but right now do not have them to photograph.

Hi Nithya Prabha:

Sharing my experience...

From the pattern list given in the URL by RajiniKasthuri, I had tried out the following patterns long back and they came out well: shell path edging, open fan edging, open shell edging and 'little clovers edging'. Except for the last pattern, the other three can be crocheted independently and then attached to cloth; the last one requires cloth edge from the start. Also, the open fan edging does not require you to decide the length first, i.e. you will be making 1 fan at a time , rather than go row by row.

Another interesting source from the net: Please use the keywords "antique pattern library crochet edging book" while doing a search. There are vintage crochet books available for download in pdf format. Some of them are only on crochet edgings. I am unable to provide the link here since my post gets rejected if I do so.

BTW, have you noticed the thread that is used for crocheting on churidar tops and dupattas that are being sold? The thread is multi-color and very soft, it is not anchor or cone thread. Any idea where you get these threads in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Bangalore?

Regards
