The following statistics on depression in women come from the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH):

One in four women will experience severe depression at some point in life.

Depression affects twice as many women as men, regardless of racial and ethnic background or income.

Depression is the number one cause of disability in women.

In general, married women experience depression more than single women do, and depression is common among young mothers who stay at home full-time with small children.

Women who are victims of sexual and physical abuse are at much greater risk of depression.

At least 90 percent of all cases of eating Disorders occur in women, and there is a strong relationship between ED and depression.

Depression can put women at risk of suicide. While more men than women die from suicide, women attempt suicide about twice as often as men do.

Only about one-fifth of all women who suffer from depression seek treatment.

Signs of Depression in Women

Not all women with depression have the same symptoms. Some women might have only a few symptoms, while others may have several. If you have one or more of the following symptoms of depression for more than two weeks or months at a time, see your healthcare provider. Some possible depression symptoms include:

Feeling sad, anxious, or "empty"

Feeling hopeless

Loss of interest in hobbies and activities that you once enjoyed, including sex

Decreased energy

Difficulty staying focused, remembering, or making decisions

Sleeplessness, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping and not wanting to get up

Lack of desire to eat and weight loss, or eating to "feel better" and weight gain

Thoughts of hurting yourself

Thoughts of death or suicide

Being easily annoyed, bothered, or angered

Constant physical symptoms that do not get better with treatment, such as headaches, upset stomach, and pain that does not go away.

Keep in mind that having some symptoms of depression does not mean a woman is clinically depressed. For example, it is not unusual for those who have lost a loved one to feel sad, helpless, and disinterested in regular activities. Only when these symptoms persist for an unusually long time is there reason to suspect that grief has become depressive illness.

Similarly, living with the stress of potential layoffs, heavy workloads, or financial or family problems may cause irritability and "the blues." Up to a point, such feelings are simply a part of human experience. But when these feelings increase in duration and intensity and an individual is unable to function as usual, what seemed to be a temporary mood may have become a clinical illness. That is why if you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned, you should talk with your healthcare provider.

Hi All,
I have lost my mother 2 years back and since she left us suddenly it has come to me like a blow and have been under tremendous depression and anxiety. I have two kids, 7 years and 3 years and find it very difficult to cope with myself. I try to come out of it and then suddenly i get into anxiety and depression. I laugh outside but inside my heart I am very disturbed. I fear death too now. I am unable to concentrate on work and my head is full of confusion. It has affected me deeply. Need to get out of all this and live life beautifully without thinking all these thougths. Hoping to get a favourable reply from anyone out here...........

first of all a big hug to you...

I can understand your situation because I have been through all this all my life... I am not going to get into details but I have lost my elder sister, my younger brother, my 2 mausi's (aunts) all due to Cancer....and all this with in a span of 6 years...and my mom is still suffering from it....so as you can see I have a very bad family history of Cancer...

I have been through all this...I know the fear of death...I won't say I am out of it...because somewhere I still live with that fear...having lost so many loved ones one by one...the fear has become kind of permanent in my heart...

I still remember everyone everyday....but I have accepted that they are gone...and I want to remember them with a smile...What I tell myself is that throughout the world people face so many problems...what about those who lose there everything in an earthquake or say tsunami one day....so yes this is life...you have to live with it...I have accepted is as a part of my destiny and made PEACE with is....I will ask you to do the same...

Can I ask you to read this book "Many Lives Many Masters" by Dr. Brian Weiss...it helped me tremendously....it just makes you believe that all your loved one are around you...and you will meet them again in next birth.. .

I too couldnt sleep for days after I lost my sister and then brother...and they all suffered in front of me...in fact I had to be given anti-anxiety injections in order to get sleep...but today I live a normal happy life... I miss them every day but I remember them with a smile...

People ask me...from where you get so much strength...and I tell them...from nowhere because when you see so much suffering in life...there's a special strength that comes from within you....it comes on its own...

So cheer up...and enjoy life.. appreciate what you have in life....your mom will always be with you...enjoy each day

Hi Sunnaa,
Instead of giving me a hug you need to be hugged.......... you have really been through a rough patch and to make peace is very difficult in such times, but with Gods grace you have managed to make peace.
I will definitely keep your messages in mind when I am in the middle of an anxiety or depression attack. Its so frustrating you know. I want to play and enjoy with my kids and then suddenly this gloomy cloud is hovering right above my head and I find it difficult to come out of it and be my normal. But from now on, I will keep your message in mind and whenever the gloomy cloud is above, will try my level best to push it off....... thank aton dear and hope you have a nice time in your life................. thanks alot for ur advice.

Nice post on Depression.. Even i have the few symptoms of depression what u've listed out.. But i just try to come out of it as soon as possible.. The thing is how muchever i feel down or depressed, i dont like dwelling in that mood for a long..
