Sushma,

When I started working out 6 months ago, I also didn't know the answer to the question you were asking. And it was driving me crazy. So, I took a book and read a few about it. Here is the brief...

1 gm of Fat = 9 Calories
1 gm of Carbohydrate = 4 Calories
1 gm of Protein = 4 Calories

Our body stores energy in the form of fat. So, if you burn 300 calories, then you would loose 300/9 = 33 grams of weight.

Hope this helps.

Uma

P.S. The book I found very useful during my weight reduction process was
Body for Life
