Default Places to visit: Karnataka and around

Hello ILites,

I am starting this thread to compile interesting places to see in and around Karnataka -- be it historical, modern, technological or industrial. During the past year, my oldest is learning about Indian civilization and History. This has made him inquisitive and utterly curious.

We will be in India during Summer. He has a long list of what he wants to visit and explore. We visited Belur, Halebid, Kudremukh, BBgiri, chickmagalur, and Shimoga. I thought we could present him with more choices to explore locally and involve him. Not sure how much we could cover other parts of India. I will be busy with a few weddings, not to mention the festive Shravana month.

Kerala is on our list. We will be visiting Trivandrum(for a wedding). Also plan to visit Kovalam Beach, Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari. Any suggestions?

It would be good time just go around local places -- be it in the city or rural areas. It would be good for my wallet too. Please share your favorite places to visit in Karnataka and around, important places to see, easy accessibility etc..

These were the places I plan to start with
Bangalore:
Bangalore Palace
Lalbagh
Sir MVishveshwaraiah Museum
Bull Temple
ISKCON temple
Bannerghatta National Park (Kanakapura road, 22kms., Lion and Tiger safari, Zoo, Butterfly park)
Nandi Hills(day trip)

Mysore:
Chamundi hills
Mysore Palace
KRS
Bandipur(3 hours journey)
SriRangapatna(25-30 Kms.???)

Tumkur:
Shivagange
Devarayana Durga (hiking)

Feel free to add to the current list and/ or add more places of interest. Looking forward to all additions.

Hampi is interesting as is the Tipu Sultan museum. For natural beauty Telecauvery is quite inspiring.

If you want to see beautiful temples, there are a lot in the Bylakuppe area in the Tibetan settlements. The Golden Temple is the most famous but there are other like at Sera Monastery and a number in that area in Kagyu sect. If you hire a local driver they can take you.

Kannadiga ILites,

share your favorite places. Is there any web sites that provide info based on districts or areas. I am looking for a little more detailed description. Thanks.

Another interesting place is Ponmudi near TVM.

Hi Shiji

I have travelled from bangalore to mysore more than a hundred times till date, but have not heard abt the vishnu temple u mentioned in srirangapattam? Did u mean the "Sri Ranganatha temple" or is there a different vishnu temple? I would also like to mention abt the "Nimishambha temple" as well. I have been there severa times and is a beautiful place by the river side. Moreover, it is believed that Nimishamba devi will turn ur wishes into reality in a minute (thats in one nimisha).

Hi Rekha,

I've been thinking on the places and hence delay in this reply. Within Bangalore, you can cover Mahalakshmi Layout Anjaneya temple...near Iskcon, which is good.
Similarly there is Ragigudda temple in Jayanagar 9th block.
And Butterfly park...it really depends if its the butterfly season. Last time when I took my daughter there, we could see very few butterflies....but their shows about butterflies and a small museum there are good.
You can cover Planeterium as well when you go to Visweswariah museum.

Apart from Bangalore, on the Bangalore-Mysore highway, you get some deviations which have small temples, small water falls and small mountains. Like karigiri betta near Srirangapattana, Balamuri falls.

I had uploaded an excel sheet that had different places with different parameters. Let me share it again. Hope it helps.

Regards,
Hema
