Default Dasara celebration at Mysore

Hi....

I am planning to visit Mysore on next week to attend one of my friend’s marriages. I am going one day before so that I can see Dasara celebrations at Mysore palace. How far is this palace from railway station? Which is the best time to visit that palace (morning/evening)?

Regards

Hi Asha

Nice to know that you will be going to Mysore. I am from Mysore and I am missing the dasa celebrations this time. There are lots of places to see in Mysore. Palace is not very far from railway station, may be some 5-6 kms. You can take a taxi/auto to go there. The palace would be illuminated in the evenings and thats a wonderful sight, dont miss it. You can go there in the late afternoon, look around the interiors and stay to watch the lighting. You can also visit Chamundi Hills,Brindavan gardens etc.. There would be some bus tours also. Enjoy.

Veena.

Madam
Mysore Palace
Once the residence of the Wodeyars, this structure is one of the largest of its kind in India. Built in 1912 in the Indo Saracenic style, this place excludes a grandeur that is unmatched. The Golden Royal Elephant Throne, the Durbar Hall, the Kalyana Mantap and the Gallery are the main attractions here. A priceless national treasure and the pride of a kingdom, the MysorePalace is the seat of the famed Wodeyar .

An eclectic synthesis of architectural styles the palace is one of India’s most dramatic national monuments. Today it is a museum housing treasures from across the world reflecting the rich and colorful history of the erstwhile princely state of Mysore

The majestic Durbar Hall with its ornate ceiling and sculpted pillars and the Marriage Pavilion with its chandeliers, cast-iron pillars and Belgian stained glass arranged in peacock designs in the domed ceilings are the main attractions. Make sure you see the magnificent jewel-studded golden throne, the pride of the Wodeyars and the symbol of their sovereignty, displayed here during the Dussehra festival in October.

THe place is about 3 to 4 km from railway station. Timings : 10 AM to 5:30 PM all the days
Entrance Fee : Rs. 25/= per head.
Phone : 0821.2434425

Apart from the main palace, kings' personal museum is also present and can be entered with Rs.15/- entry fee. Guides are available at the entrance. No cameras are allowed inside.
Every Sunday, government holidays and on dasara festival, palace is lit up in lights. Timing of lighting is 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
