Hi Girls I always liked the design of mango mala but did not know what its called until one day I saw it in a jewellary store. I was totally smitten by it and think about it every day. This is not something we have in north india but it looks very common to me in south india. What it is common? what is the story? If I have to buy, how should I buy? I like simple, ethnic and not super expensive. FYI - No plans to buy anytime soon but may be next year.
Mango mala is a very beautiful piece of jewelry. It is a very old model and it came back into fashion nowadays. Worn with kanchipattu sarees, it looks awesome. I think the starting price point is around 2500$ when I last checked. It is a very common model and most established indian jewelry stores sell it. There is also another model called kaasu mala, do check it out when you are at it. It is also a similar model.
You are right, it is very common in South Indian jewelry. An old but very lovely motif. If you are going to India you will have a nice choice if you go to any South Indian jewelers. They will know what you are asking. I like the simple choker style best, but the long necklace is also beautiful. I have one in silver that I wear often.
these are the images of mango mala. the 3rd picture is tradistional style and the 1st and 2nd is quite latest. i had one which i chose bit thin, (about 24 grams) but it gets turned while wearing. so had to trade in to another type of long mala. i suggest u to buy a bit thick one like in the second picture so it will stay perfectly while wearing. not sure about the story or history tough. i guess it could be because mango and mango leaves are considered auspicious by tamilians? mango bhuttis are people's favorite design on saree too.
