Phew! My title is so long, I have tried to combine all of the skin related problems.

When Laya was born, the midwife told us that her skin is dry and we have to apply olive oil. Since then, we have been doing it atleast twice a day. Her skin looks ok now, except for some dry patches on her forehead, left arm and left thigh. Some days it looks like they are all gone, next day they reappear.

The next worry is that since day before yesterday I am seeing blackheads on her face. I am terribly disturbed by it. My mother some days apply badam powder with olive oil. She herself powders the badam. Couple of days she had used badam+milk. I am not sure if that was the reason, anyway stopped that.

Worry number three is cradle cap. I am not sure how it looks like, but Laya has lots of flaky, dandruffy stuff on her head, there is nothing on the back of her head. Is this normal? Is there a remedy for this?

And to top this all, for last two days I am seeing that she is losing lots of hair. Some areas really look baldy. You can see in the profile pic that she has lots of hair, and so many people have been commenting on her hair and my mother things it is 'drishti' ;-( I am wondering if the vaccination can cause this?

We bathe her everyday, but have not used any soap or shampoo yet!

    Any ideas, suggestions, anybody?

    dear,

dont worry. What all you have written is common for some babies. first for the skin dryness, take few drops of pure coconut oil, rub your hands to make it little hot and apply in round in the dry areas. Always keep that areas greasy. we used to apply green gram powder only. For the same problem for my grand daughter the child specialist asked to use dove soap. Gradually it went off.

Hair problem, it is not dandruff. it is common in all children. some children will have more. Hair fall is mainly because of that only. It will grow again. dont try to take the flakes from the head. It will come with the hair only. What are you using to remove the oil from the hair. for that we will use bason only. after one year we will use baby shampoo also.

    my love to your kidoo.

agreeing with ganges. DS did have cradle cap. I used a bit of mineral oil, massaged his hair, used a soft brush to brush off cradle cap and then washed his hair. It took us a month to get rid of cradle cap. The hair loss is from the child sleeping a lot on her back, given that we are given this advice to lay our children down on the back to prevent SIDS. DS' hairfall stopped once he started rolling around.
If you think the hairfall is severe and the cradle cap out of the ordinary, your health visitor should be in a position to rule out a fungal infection. I am not too sure about the blackheads though! I would take it to the HV and ask for her/his opinion.

Rekha, My DS has started having this, for the past 2days, its all over his upper hair. Even am planning to apply oil and comb tomo, before hair wash. Am using J&J top to toe wash. Any suggestions ladies, for a milder/better hairwash solution for babies?
Anitha, I remember you telling me about gingelly oil for Nilu. Do you apply that to her hair as well? For body, after gingelly oil, you wash with pears soap is it? For hair, what do you use?
Earlier DS had slight flakes only on his fontanels... now he is having it all over his top.

    Rekha & Pon.,

Aditi too had the same problem ( Dandruff like thing) in her hair. Consulted her Ped. about the same... she asked me to apply little oil and wash her. Now she is fine. I apply little oil after bath too, to avoid dryness.

I use J&J oil and J&J Head to toe to wash her hair.

rekha, although zoey's hairfall and cradle cap used to worry me at times, i just kept to it as she will outgrow them soon.
earlier she had cradle cap on her brows as well, that is the first 3 weeks which disappeared, but the one on the fontanel still remains.
also everytime i chk her pillow theres quite a bit of hair on it. thinking coz since they are lying down so much?

i just read about the cradle cap thing, and they say babies will soon outgrow it...

about the dry skin too, i guess it should just be okay as she grows, since u are already massaging her with oil.... blackheads, i am not too sure of

    Hi Rekha, Pon

Some months back Lenora had the cradle cap. I did read all the sites and concluded that mineral oil is the best for the situation, vegetable oil worsens the situation. Now I use Johnsons Hair Oil with avacado and its working fine on Lenora. I use Pears mild soap for skin and hair and have had no issues till date as it is very mild. I do not intend to use any body wash till atleast one year.
I apply Mother's Care Lotion on the body and Neem oil on the face coz we have mosquitoes around. Eventually what I realised Neem is helping sorting all the issues be it mosquito bites or cleansing of the skin. I use Dabur Lal tail for the body massage no veggie oils.
I think it may be excess oil which could give rise to blackheads. Leno had whiteheads at birth but paed mentioned coz of BM. I had stopped applying oil on the face after three months. Now everything is fine. It will clear as months pass by. Neem can help reduce the marks which blackheads would leave behind.
Rekha if the dry skin condition is tropical then it needs to be treated as most of the skin conditions are allergic or climatic in nature.

Rekha, my DS also had some of these in the initial months. For dry skin pure petroleum jelly really helped. It is very thick and greasy and if generously applied right after the bath when the skin is damp it helps to retain the skin's moisture. The greasier your cream or lotion the better it is.

He had cradle cap as well. We just brushed off with a comb. Our ped suggested to use a little bit of dandruff shampoo taking care to not get in the eyes, so that is what we did, only when it was a lot.

Cradle cap even though unsightly is not harmful and will go away after a while. Like Tikka says just rule out an infection.

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Dry skin: I am continuing the olive oil. will move to petroleum gelly if it is severe. I've not yet started soap or shampoo as I dont want to aggravate the dryness.
    blackhead: gone!!
cradle cap: I will see for one more month and if it doesnt go away will try the mineral oil+comb
hair loss: I will wait and see.
