Thumb sucking!

My LO is 7 weeks old ans he discovered his thumb 2 weeks ago and he sucks vigorously at times...
Unfortunately, I sucked my thumb until I was 5-6 yrs old (when I was kid!). So I am lil worried though not stressed out!!

I know most of the times it is to self soothe but normally when do babies/kids stop thumb sucking?

Mine started at 3.5 months stopped at 5 months, with gentle taking it out and giving a pacifier in its place. I recommend waiting on the use of pacifier till the child is older, say after 6 weeks. Otherwise it could lead to nipple confusion (if you are breastfeeding.)
To add: DS weaned himself off pacifier when he turned around 7 months.

Don't worry, they will stop by themselves most of the time before 1 yr.

My daughter at5months&stopped when she was 9months. She was doing non-stop in all activites, while sleeping. Like you we were verymuch concerned regarding that habbit, as her dad& chittappa(dad's brother) had this habbit till there schooling.

But one fine day, we were suprised to see her not putting her fingure in her mouth, we actually didn't notice when she stopped.
She stopped herself, but we came to realise it after few days only....

To stop that habbit, we have put bandage, tied cloth ...nothing worked in her case.

Because your baby is just weeks old......... it is very much usual and not to be concerned of .

Sucking in children is a pleasure and comfort giving activity.

Its normal in kids upto 5 yrs of age .if the habit continues even after the permanent teeth have erupted that is at or after 6 yrs of age , it can lead to dental problems .

The child sucks his / her thumb when : anxious , stressed or hungry
Ensure calmness for your child. You can take the help of a lullaby toy or an extra soft blanket. The child will identify himself with the thing and his nervousness will gradually subside.
