After 6 months .. By one year the baby will be eating solids and water is a must then. Until 6 months, water is not necessary only if a baby is exclusively bf
With my first kid my doc asked me to start water right when I started solids so close to 6 months. Ask your ped.
It depends on how heavy the baby is. If the baby's weight is on the lower end, it is better to defer giving water. Over-hydration could cause electrolyte imbalance in babies and could lead to something called water poisoning. My baby just about made it to the lower end of the percentile chart, so I breast-fed her after every meal for a few min or if she seemed thirsty till she was 9 or 10 months old. She would stop herself after a couple of mins if she were merely quenching her thirst. A sip here and a sip there of water should be fine after 6 months in most cases. It is supposed to be better to wait until after the child is 9 months old.
Start water when you start solids.. Mine was not a fan of water that much. I used to give rice kanji , oats kanji and mashed veggies in a little watery consistency. Apart from that when ever he is thirsty, he comes to me for milk. I was feeding him until he turned one.
I gave water for my first one only after she turned one. She was on the lower percentile in weight and paed advised me to BF her after every solid feed. This way she had something with nutrition rather than plain water.
Thanks everyone, I will wait till I start solids. I don't know what percentile my baby is at. Will have to ask my paed at next visit. Cooks.
