Hi Vaidehi, Well we are sailing in almost the same boat. You are moving from India and We just moved from CA last week. We too don't know a soul or a thing in Maryland. We decided to settle down in Ellicott city as howard county schools are rated one of the best in US. I have a 4 year old girl so faced similar problem of school and apartment but well did lot of research on net. If u too are looking for a friend we can get together infact any ladies staying in MD and driveable distance. We can all form a nice group and have a playgroup which would be great for our kids and us as well. As everyone in this thread said that winters are freezing in MD and its hard to take kids outside atleast in this way we all can meet and winters would'nt be a torture .So hoping to hear from all of u, Have a great day, Megha

Hi All: We recently moved to Glenwood, MD from NOVA. I am mom to a 9 yr old girl and a 3 yr old boy and am looking to make some new friends here. Glenwood is a little town in Howard County close to Columbia, Clarksville and Ellicott City. We are probably close to Baltimore too. Would love to get together with you ladies. Hope we can meet sometime soon! Take care! Anu Last edited by Induslady; 28th September 2007 at 08:47 AM. Reason: Please do not provide email ids in the public forum to avoid spamming

I have been living in fairfax, virginia (about 30 min drive from Gaithersbugh) for teh past 20 years. Please do not have any apprehensions whatsoever. There is a large Indian community here. The shiva vishnu place is a good place where you can make friends and meet like minded people. There is even a kutcheri season. I go there every sat and stay there for suprabatham and shiva abhishekam etc. There is a chimaya mission in maryland - another excellent place to form friends. |

I am staying at Brighton Village Apartments close by where all Indians are there and there is Indian Grocery store and Woodlands restaurant nearby. There is a school also nearby. If you need any further details please send me a private message and i can give you more information. Regards, TDU

Hi! all, This is Nirushan, We have been staying in Gaithersburg in Maryland for last 6 yrs. I stay in a small community called Brighton Village Apts. You need not have to worry Vaidehi as there are lot many Indians in this community, schools nearby, temples on 45 min distance but with own car that is quite possible. There are 4-5 Indian grocery stores nearby and you get all the stuff and vegetables you have in India. If you want some more info plz reply me in private message and will try to help you in possible way. Cheers, Nirushan.

Dear TDU,rrajgo,Nirushan, A warm regards to all of u, for giving me all those information abt maryland. Ur post made me feel little comfortable, coz i had this constant worry how will we get used to a totally new place with diffn environment etc. I do have so many questions at the back of my mind, I wold like have some help from u all regarding :- 1. which place would be ideal for a family of three (couple +one kid) in terms of afforadbilty for a new commer. 2. What is the avg rent in areas like gaithersburg,Rockville etc. 3. Whom should we get in touch or how to look out for an Apt. 4. Procedures (advance, Utilitiy payment etc) to be handled in terms of Apt. 5. How to proceed for getting a social security number in maryland. 6. Schooling for my 3 yr old kid. if i could get answers for all this questions, i would be much more relaxed and would have an breif idea about handling things once we reach US. Thanks in advance to all of u. Ur help will be of a great help for us. Cheers vaidehi

Vaidehi, Schooling for your 3 year old should be the least of your worries atleast for the initial months. Kids here need to be five years old to be placed in Kindergarten in the public school system. Any one younger than that have pre-school options. All of the pre-schools are privately operated except the state run head start programs which is for lower income families (combined family income needs to a certain amount or less) All of the private pre-schools take in students any time. You can make use of various apartment finder sites to have an idea about what the going rents are in montgomery county (in which gaithersburg is ), maryland. By the rule of the thumb a single bedroom apartment in decent/safe places in this metro area is around 1000 $ + per month. http://www.homeproperties.com/apartm...ch-results.asp this site will give you info on how / where /what is needed to obtain SSN https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/Controller this i found by entering zipcode 20850 , a montgomery county zipcode. good luck with your move to US...
