Paris is a city where every street and corner is worth visiting. Best bet would be to buy a tourist book/guide and pick places that interest you. A city that must be enjoyed on foot, if you ask me! There is lots to see. Of course the must see places are (according to me):
Notre-Dame cathedral, Louvre Museum (Please do not try to finish of Louvre in one day. It is not possible as there is lots to see and your mind will get saturated in a few hours. Give it a good few days, if you are keen.), Eiffel Tower (if you plan on going up the tower, then please make sure that you reach there quite early in the morning as there is always a long queue), Montmartre, Sacre Coeur, Versailles, Fontainebleau, Champs Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, a show at Moulin Rouge (if you are keen on. I believe the tickets are expensive), Seine River Cruise (this is supposed to be romantic, but unfortunately I did not have that experience).

If you have local friends, then would be handy. Else travel guide is best.
Enjoy your stay!

Regarding things to buy, I am not so sure as I did not do any shopping other than for music CDs.
You get some good pencil sketches or even copies of pencil sketches or paintings on the road side, mainly when you approach a place call Saint Michel. They can be good souvenirs to take back. We got some Eiffel Tower key rings, some posters/post cards of old Paris, lovely scarf for women, fridge magnets, bottle of French wine maybe, mmmmmmmmmm....can not think of anymore at the moment.

Hope the above helps.
