Default Urgent : About visa and accomodation details in Swiz

Hi all,

My husband is going for a short term project to US very soon, so i am also accompanying him.If at all my tourism visa gets confirmed, we have a plan to visit Switzerland while returning back.

Since we require separate visa for Swiz(though being a 2 day visit), please share here the general formalities and procedure for applying to it. How easy it is to get a tourist visa for Swiz?

If at all we plan in october or november , is it a perfect climate for visiting?

From frankfurt can we go by train or flight is the only option?

Approximately how much we will have to spend for food and accomodation , say for 2 days.

Likewise are there any nearby places in and around frankfurt for sight seeing?

I know this is a long list, sorry for troubling you all..But please share the details when you find time, so that we plan accordingly. thanks.

I would recomment visiting Interlaken if you are going to be in Frankfurt for just a couple of days. We booked our tickets online before leaving US. We took a couple of trains from Darmstadt(after visiting my DH's cousin) to Interlaken. It was quite cold at Jungfrau in June. It is well worth the effort.

Cindhuja

We halted only three days in Darmstadt, so we could only cover Interlaken. The train trip to Jungfrau will take a whole day and the next day we spent in the Interlaken village, where you can spend time paragliding, shopping or taking shorter routes up Jungfrau. Because of our schedule, we had to change two or three trains to get there, but it was very convenient . There is an Indian restaurant on top of Jungfrau. Since it has been four years since we visited, I will have to slowly recollect the details. But you can see the following link to get some more information.

Interlaken

Hi Cindu,

I'm copy pasting what DH typed for your query. Please come back with more questions:)

The nice places to see in Switzerland are in the middle and south which are far from Frankfurt. One option is to take the train from Frankfurt to Basel in Switzerland which has very good connection by fast train approx. 3 hrs. Once in Basel, you can take trains to Zurich or Geneva or Berne. Zurich is another 2 hrs. Once in Zurich you can spend a day taking boat rides on the lake, walking through the old town, and another day you could take a round trip by train to the nearby mountains. From Zurich you could take the train to Lucerne which is approx. 1 .5 hrs and in Lucerne also take boat rides and walk through the historic old town. Buses and train are available to the Pilatus mountain from where the city is beautiful. There are cable car rides to the mountain. Again back from Lucerne to Basel (mostly via Zurich) and back to Frankfurt by the ICE fast train. Possible to do this in 3-4 days including travel. If less time available, stop with Zurich and return.
The same trip can be done by car, may not save time, but has additional flexibility. By train from Frankfurt to Zurich and back could cost up to EUR 180 per person (train travel is not cheap) and EUR 350 for two persons. Car rental could cost upto EUR 50-60 per day for small ones incl. Insurance. Driving could be tricky if not used to the terrain and left-hand-drive.
If not very keen on Switzerland, there are nice spots around Frankfurt. Top spots are Mainz on river Rhine and Heidelberg castle, black forest (Freiburg) and further south Lindau on Lake Constance.
One option is to rent a car and drive to Heidelberg then down south to the famous black forest (Freiburg) and then to Lindau and then further into Switzerland through Schaffhausen or Basel to Zurich. Basel is an industrial town, not scenic or very beautiful compared to other cities.
Hope this helps. If you know exactly which days/time you are likely to be in Frankfurt, some details can be more clearly looked into. November will be very cold, short days and partly snowing and so to be careful when driving. October would be better, but still short days and cold.

Latha
