hi sowmi,
rice price going up and non availability of any indian rice other than basmati is happening world wide now...this is because india banned export of non-basmati rice last october to improve the food price inflation in india. There is a decline in the rice stocks in india, so the price went up and poor people are suffering..so govt has stopped rice exports to other countries. after protests from indian exporters, the govt. has lifted the ban but hiked the price of export rice to discourage exporting.
this has caused panic all over the world becoz india is the second largest rice producer in the world. this is why indian grocery stores abroad have raised rice price and say they dont have stock....after all we indians abroad have options of having other rice like thai, australian rice etc....but poor people in india dont have any options right...so we will have to wait and see what happens..

Thumbs up Re: Indian rice prices have gone up !!!

Not only indian rice varities, thai and the american long grain rice also in demand.walmart, sams and costco are imposed limits on purchasing rice............and wheat flour is also in demand
But india recently announced, india would produce bounteous harvest of wheat and rice this summer,I hope we will get indian rice in reasonable prize then.

Hello sowmi
not only rice price, price of other basci necessities have gone up beyond the limits. it is due to shortage of grains. cultivation has come down. i heard some of the locals of small villages around chennai like, vandalloor, gooduvancheri, katankulathur etc saying that since there is a plan for constructing new chennai city there and the price of the land also has gone up people now have started selling the lands for buildings. due to recent heavy rain in souther parts of tamilnadu all crops have been washed ut in the water. and you know harvested rice which had to be supplied to the ration shops kept in the godown in tnelveli got wet in the water and it is not in the usable state. but some rice merchants of andra are trying to buy it to sell after polishing the same.

we are really finding it difficult to manage with rising price of necessities like milk, oil, wheat. oflate health conscious. jim, yoga and diet culture is spreading fast that people have started taking broken wheat rava as a substitue for rice and the price for that also has gone up per kg Rs.78.

and say 6 years back i was listening to a programme on agri in all india radio-chennai i which an agri scientist spoke. he said that people should get used to small grains like millets, ragi, jovar, corn, maize as an alternate to rice little by little as in future there would be a shortage of rice. infact they are doing research in kolli hills and elakai hills and hills around tocultivate these grains with the help of local tribals. they are right i feel now. this is the actual situation

hi geeth,
thanks for the info...it was an eye opener...looks like one day we might have to eat only salads and greens if grains and other basics become so expensive....
and we indians have such well developed tongue that it will be very difficult for us to manage..
