Thumbs up Returning to India

Hi,

I have been living in Scotland for the past 9 years . Now my children are 11 and 9. I am planning to go back to India because if I miss now, I think I can never go back. I have read some of the threads about "returning to India" and all the pros and cons from IL. I am still overwhelmed with all the schools in Tamil Nadu (from where I come), still could not decide. I am worried about my children being adjusted from UK education system to Indian one. Is it compulsory to take second language in Indian schools? Is boarding schools worth going for?
CBSC or ICSE? so much to decide.

Many thanks
Malathy

Hi Malathy:

Not to worry, you sail through it. It is just that the change is so huge, that it seems overwhelming! Well, for someone who moved from the UK to India last year, I can empathise with you.

Regarding schools, if it is to Chennai that you are headed, check the Chennai forum for school information. Second langauge is compulsory, however, certain schools do give the option of French and German, that should be easier if your children have studied them (even elementary level is fine) in Scotland. Familiarity of the language increases comfort level.

My son found Hindi difficult, but had the choice of French this year. Whereas my daughter has Kannada and Hindi as her 2nd and 3rd language respectively and I'm feel mighty pleased that she is doing increasingly well in both!

My children seem to have adjusted well enough, though they do have their pet hates - exams, some teachers who are strict. Oh well, you can't expect them to like it completely. They tend to compare schooling in India and UK - this I think time will take care of.

CBSE - good for children who have an aptitude for maths and science.

ICSE - English is given more prominence here.

This was mentioned by a head teacher of one of the reputed schools in Bangalore, so I presume that she knows what she is talking about.

Hope this helps.

Lots of good wishes on your move when you finalise.

Sindhu
