Default Help on cargo shipping from London to Chennai

Hello people ,

We are staying at Hertfordshire Council (near London) for the past 10 months and by April we are moving back to Chennai .

We would like to cargo few household things to Chennai and are looking at sea freight as a good option.

Are there anybody here who have had the experience to ship things by sea cargo to India ? If yes , could you please provide me the cargo shipping company name and any website .And how much were you satisfied with their service ? How much charges they quoted you ?

Thanks in advance and expecting atleast a few responses on this .

Regards
Lincy

Hello Lincy,

I have heard of sevenseasworldwide.com providing service to deliver goods to India.

I don't have any details regarding the price and service as I have never used it.

I hope this information is useful and if I come across any other cargo delivery service shall drop a post.

Hi Lincy:

We moved to Bangalore from Milton Keynes in November last. All our moving was done by Delahaye movers. But our move was taken care of my husband's company. Also, we moved very little of our stuff back to India, so we could do it by air. So I have no clue about the price quoted for cargo shipping.

Their service was pretty good though. Sorry I cannot help you further on this.

Sea freight is definitely best way since it is cost effective and you can ship whatever you want to take back home. However, if you take new items there is a high custom duty on it. Would like to mention here that, whatever you ship, do check with the cargo company about the custom duty in India on your household items.

Hope this helps.

Sindhu

linsraj,

I am now in the process on shifting a container to Holland by sea. And just three months back, I cleared a container that came by sea.

Technically, if you opt for TR (transfer of residence), and shift personal effects (domestic stuff), you should not be charged duty. But our personal expeience was that, though we had only books, used clothes and household articles, we had to pay duty and bribe to the customs officer. The duty and bribe is all arbitrarily fixed by the customs. So, as Sindhu says, please check the duty rates thoroughly before you sea shift new items.

And also check the door to door clearing clause. Most logistics companies do not deliver fully on that.

You might need a reliable clearing agent when you clear the container in India. He can make all the difference in this process- from negotiating with customs, to safeguarding your stuff in the warehouse to getting it moved to your door.

All said and done, it is not a tough job.Just needs muscle and patience.

Sorry that I cannot give you names of any shipping companies. Since husband works for a shipping company, our container moves free of cost thru them.

Goodluck!
