Hello, Priya

I haven't taken the test in Hurst, but I have taken the test in Iowa. Here, you have to parallel park with a car in front, but nothing behind you, which makes things a bit easier.

I am notoriously uncoordinated, especially in reverse, so parallel parking has always been a challenge for me! However, my driving instructor showed me a fairly easy and foolproof way to do it. Although it would be easiest if someone showed you, I'll try to explain it here in words:

1) First, pull up next to the car behind which you will end up parked eventually. Your side mirror should be at most a foot away from and directly in line with the other car's side mirror.

2) Once you are satisfied with your position next to the car, start reversing. As you reverse, turn your wheel hard to the right. Continue reversing and turning your wheel to the right until you are at a 45 degree angle to the car next to you.

3) Once you are satisfied with your angle, straighten your wheel and continue reversing. Check over your shoulder and try to estimate how far frm the curb you are. Use the car in front or behind you to gauge where the curb is. Do not bump the curb.

4) As soon as there is sufficient space between you and the car in front of you, drive forward, straightening the wheel as you go.

5) Reverse again if necessary to straighten your car. This step is sometimes not necessary if you can achieve a good position with the 4 steps above (good position is straight in the parking bay, not touching the kerb, and a good distance between the car in front and behind you).

I hope this helps. The only thing that will make a difference, really, is practice. So, find a deserted side street and practise your parking, but please be careful of the innocent cars you'll be using to practise behind or in front of! Good luck with your parking, and your test.
