Hi,

In my personal experience, I think you get everything here itself.

But if you are so specific, then you can get mixie, with 110 volts........else get a normal mixie and then a converter along with it.

Pack a dosa kal.......you dont get it and a pressure cooker too...........others all you will get there itself...................

Thumbs down Re: help me pack

Hi priyasim,

First, congratulations for your trip and welcome to US !

If you are particular about making idlis/dosas you can bring a small grinder with built in US adaptor.( these are available in Ratna stores)

Sometimes the mixie brought from india (even ones with the coverter) start giving problems and we may not be able to repair it here. In my personal opinion, I would suggest to bring a small grinder instead of mixie.(it is going to occupy more or less the same space)

We get good quality osterizer blenders for grinding batters for idlis/dosas/kurmas/chutneys/thogayals/dry spice powders etc. Juices/lassis and shakes can also be made in this.

We do get sambar powder/rasampowders and all other essential spices for our indian cooking. But since you are going to be here for a year, then you can bring small packets of sambarpowder, rasam powder, paruppu podi etc. These can also be stored in the freezer if you are concerned about the freshness.Well packed pickles that come in big plastic packets ( some stores in chennai especially sell these for people taking them abroad) are also a good idea.

Once again, we do get all kinds of pickles, appalams etc, but to begin with you can bring some for your initial use.

You can also buy leather jackets and some winter clothing ( just one or two) since these are expensive here compared to chennai. of course, we do get everything , and if there is space constraint, you can buy them here.

You can bring few pictures of Gods/Goddesses, pooja items like lamps, wicks, sandal powder, kumkum etc.

As for cooking utensils, better to buy pressure cooker (maybe 1 small and 1 medium) with extra gaskets, weights, safety valves etc.

We do get dosa tavas in different sizes (iron and non stick), and other vessesls for cooking. Probably you can bring some big stainless steel spoons (karandis), idli plates, non stick kadais (available in omega brands).

Right now these are the things right on top of my head..will add more info if needed.

Have a safe journey !

Cheers
Krithika
