Hi Rani,

Nowadays, I started using thai rice to make Idli / dosas...it's not that bad.
just add one handful of urud dal more .... it comes out soft!
However making idlis with idli rice or ponni rice is more soft & tasty.

just try it!

Yes some how i don't favour thai rice too... Closest to ponni rice idli rawa and idli comes out okay. Any relatives coming from india u can ask them to get 2 kgs and u have will have good idlis for few weeks atleast.... to keep your taste buds alive :) Exporting of rice seems problem everywhere just not here, even in europe.
Cheers!

Hi rani,

I am here for almost 9 yrs. & I am also from Chennai ( Anna nagar)
Well, I too initially hated Thai rice for its stickiness...but slowly got used it. I buy AAA fragrant Thai rice for cooking from NTUC. And when we've guest at home for lunch or dinner I mix it with basmati rice...ratio 1:1 (to avoid the stickiness) it tastes good... almost like our ponni rice from India. One thing which I personally noticed, is that Thai rice keeps you 'light' whereas ponni rice even though it's filling ...it is heavy & you will feel sluggish. For ladies, who are cautious about their weight gain ...can try eating Thai rice.

Hi vidya,

Try Thai rice & Basmati rice combination. It is better alternative option for ponni rice.
Hope you like it.

Hi Anu,

I have started the AAA Jasmine Thai fragrant rice only from last week and still adjusting to it. Thanks for the tip.
For Idli do you use the same rice? Of not please mention the brand name , so that I could buy. Please tell me the Rice: urad ratio. I usually put 4: 1 with 1 tablespoon of Methi seeds, (with the usual Idli rice.)

Thank you so much.

Hi Vijee,

You might have noticed that almost all the Thai rice esp. fragrant rice carries AAA title.
(I don't know the reason behind it.) However, personally I would recommend you to buy & try different brands available in the market. It depends on individual taste & preference. Currently, I am using “Thai Hom Mali" fragrant rice. The rice is slightly fluffy than the other brands. For making idli - 3 cups of rice & urud dal 1 cup + 1 handful extra ( ஒரு கை பிடி அதிகம்.). If I use idli rava- 2:1 proportion comes out well. You try it out with adding venthayam & pls.let me.

Then Rani, Idli rice is available at many stores in little India. Abdul Rahim store opposite to komalas (upper dickson road) has it.
This is the telephone number just call & check it out. 62969601.

Hi Anu,

Thanks for your tips on make Idli maavu with Thai Rice. Infact i just tried it with your previous post and kept crossing my fingers It did come out well. I did one addition to it. I also added half cup of Aval (poha) to it. Aval gives softness to Idli.

But, are we not going to get ponni rice (from India) at all ? My stock for this month is still there, but if we dont ponni rice here, then i shld start trying Thai rice.

Cheers anyway, Anu
Regards
Shoba.
