Hi Shoba,

Thanks a lot for the FB. The tip which you mentioned, adding handful of avval ( poha) I have already heard.... but not tried, Next time....I will try to do it.

Out of my personal experience, I feel Idli turns out to be soft if the rice & dal are washed well. I wash the rice for two times & urud dal for atleast 3 times; good wash gives you the best result.

And regarding the shortage of rice, I am not sure. Even yesterday in the paper ' Tamil murasu', it has mentioned that there will be no shortage of rice in Singapore. However, the prices have gone up tremendously. In my neighbourhood Tamil shop, 1kg of Idli rice was around $1.40 now it is $2.80.

Hi every one,

I am a new member here and nice to see conversations and topics which are having a local context. This gives a personal touch to the discussion.
Just a simple tip for making Idlies that i use with great success:-

3 cups Rice, 1 cup urad dal, 2 tsp of Methi seeds, a handfull of cooked rice( this should be added along with the urad dal at the time of grinding). The cooked rice makes the idlies soft and nice
I am sure you all know that,we must grind the rice first ( a little coarse ) then the urad dal, cooked rice and methi, must be ground very smoothly. so both Rice and Urad has to be soaked separetly.

Happy Idly making
Regards
Lakshmi

[quote=Anushiv;288129]Hi Vijee,

You might have noticed that almost all the Thai rice esp. fragrant rice carries AAA title.
(I don't know the reason behind it.) However, personally I would recommend you to buy & try different brands available in the market. It depends on individual taste & preference. Currently, I am using “Thai Hom Mali" fragrant rice. The rice is slightly fluffy than the other brands. For making idli - 3 cups of rice & urud dal 1 cup + 1 handful extra ( ஒரு கை பிடி அதிகம்.). If I use idli rava- 2:1 proportion comes out well. You try it out with adding venthayam & pls.let me.

Thanks Anu,

For this month, I got the idli rice $10/5kg. Will try next month and FB.
